Hi, I'm Andrew. I love beautiful fish wherever they can be found, be it in our aquariums or in local waterways. I have kept a wide range of fish over the years, and currently enjoying my North American native fishes. I want to share with you all my knowledge of aquariums and fish from my years of experience in the hobby as well as my time spent as a Masters student studying Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences.
I hope to see you in the comments section!

I have a few Everglade ones I've imported from the US (they're impossible to find here). They have been super hardy. The only issue I've encountered is getting them to eat. I've tried all types of frozen foods and the ONLY one they'll eat are bloodworms. They ignore every other type of frozen. They'll happily eat live bbs and grindal worms. I haven't had much success with live scuds. They chase them for a bit and then lose interest. I heard they eat small ramshorn snails but haven't seen proof of that, and now my tank has exploded with ramshorn snails lol. But other than trying to find things they will eat, they're an amazing little fish.
I also used undergravel filters for years. When working they are great. But sooner or later something always goes wrong. Broken lift tube, cracked plate, system crash. When that happens you have a BIG mess. No way to replace without moving your fish. destroying your plants, and LOTS of dirty nasty water.
Ive installed mine properly this time,What I done is empty some of the water out of my fish tank,Put the pump a little way out of the water,Other side of the pump in the water,It allowes oxgen to pump in to the water for the fish to survive,Then I leave it for a week for the water to set ready to put some goldfish in,Be interesting watching them swimming about
Are the white, corrugated style with the slits still available? Those were great because they supported themselves really well.
What can i feed my celestial pearl danioas
Been taking care aquarium for over 30 years use underground filters never have any problems try those mechanical filters have problems do not trust them
Please provide the links to other videos in this series.
My under gravel filter tank is thriving in large part thanks to you! Best wishes to you and glad you're doing fulfilling work.
I have Rainbow Shiners now-a-days because of your video from two or so years ago.
You are an intelligent, well-spoken guy and I enjoy your content. You've always added value to the hobby. I can appreciate and relate to your perspective on life and content creation. No pressure from here, I'll be waiting with notification on for when you do drop something. Cheers!
Nice comment Bro 👍
@@MancingTanago nice of you to say. Cheers!
Yay!!!!
Good for you. Family matters most.
Is that only aqua soil with nothing covering the under gravel plate
Yes
Looking to buy some of these fish! Can’t find them anywhere. Never bought fish online before.
Is there an ideal placement of the airstone in the lift tube? Ive scoured the internet and cant find this information. Should the stone be touching the plate or should it be raised up slightly? Thanks ANYONE for any information about this :)
Definitely the best sparring footage and explanation of their behavior on tge internet today!!
too much yap yap yap to fill time.
Just found this video, June 2024. With reference to fry survival, I have to agree with Katalina and say that microorganisms are the best first food for such tiny fry. Your fry died because they starved to death. Paramecium would be the ideal starting food. If you look at the ecology of the species, the places where the parents deposit the eggs, in clumps of filamentous algae, are not only inaccessible to predators, but also rich in infusoria. So the food is there, immediately available when the fry have absorbed their yolk sacs. Makes sense, really.
I have anxiety for you! looks great though!
Great idea....need to give it a try..thanks.. new sub
Hey can you contact me ? I’m heading to Florida in a few weeks and would love to see this spot! You think you can help me locate this area so I can check it out on my way home from the beach. 😊
Hello and thanks for your video. I use canister and HOB filters. But I have always seen the aquarium stores using UGFs. I have come to like the simplicity of the UGF. I am planning in my next tank to use one and I might have an idea or two to try and make it a better Filter. But we’ll see. Much love for UGFs. And thanks again for your vid.
I connected a HOG back filter to my canister filter return hose. Added more biological media. And I have the side that pulls water connected to a tube with an underground filter. My fish are so healthy, as well as my plants.
A question if anyone knows, so is it better to run an airstone "wide open" or let's say medium setting? Is the more bubbles the better even if it's quite powerful and actually creating to much agitation, I have a Betta and they don't like a lot of agitation or water current and I don't want to harm them Thanks
I love these but not even close to the prettiest native fish here. Rainbow DARTER man. Come on hahaha.
I liked my aqua one aquarium that had an underground filter with a power head. The stock light with it wasn't really strong enough for plants, but I did try! I plan on trying again, but this time I have more of an idea as to what plants will cope with the low light conditions.
Whoa, you have me sold!
Why would you make a video about a regulator and not even show it.
So did you just drill holes in the bottom of the container so the water and eggs would drain out? Have a link to those containers? Thanks
I doubt it it's smart in his case I fell like because he uses what looks like some sort of yarn. Since it's allot of yarn it would probably be easier to drain and separate.. but it's the same with moss so idk everyone else I've seen just uses one container.
Agree 100% with your explanation. Other people want to do it another way, go for it. Your fish will die before mine. It’s going to be a matter of time. Your choice! Good luck
Such a sensitive fish! 😂🤣 👍Earned.
How do you grow the plants? I was considering trying to plant anubias plant. How do you keep the plants in the substrate in the beginning? I've purchased ugf because of your videos
How do you clean your underground filter? I just bought the Penn UGF and am wondering how often to clean it ? I've got substrate and am wondering how to plant the plants? I've watched a lot of your videos , great information 👍
Is it ok to just cover the under gravel filter plates with 3 inches of fluval stratum aqua soil and tgar it?
Love this info, thank you!
where was the catch location
Nice bookshelf! Love your selection of titles. Thanks for explaining so thoroughly- one question don’t plants in the water consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen?
your video is more off your face than the fish, can you lessen the video of yourself over the fish, you can do a voice over and the background instead off your face always on focus
This is a weird comment
@@BornTrespasser he is describing about the fish. but it is more of his face what you see than the fish. instead of showing the fish more and appreciating on how beautiful the fish is on how he describe the fish. but it is more of his face describing the fish. he will show the fish in seconds and back to his face.
Great video and review. Given that they eat live food - any suggestions on how to feed when you go away for a few days or week? There are plenty of vacation feeders for pellets or flakes - but I have never seen any for live food feeding. Any suggestions?
What is the temperature gage u are using?
I'm trying to figure out how to purchase a ugf and want to purchase a good ugf. What do you use to help grow plants? I also want power filter to help, I've got angelfish and aquarium is 29 gallon, please help me figure it out 🙏
I've been searching for a great 20 and a 29-gallon UGF, and I'm trying to find power head to fit but unsure what will fit UGF. Any suggestions please? Also do you cover the entire bottom of aquarium aquarium? I've look at UGF and the measurements wouldn't fit the entire bottom of the aquarium. I'm not sure what to purchase, I've got angelfish currently. Please consider helping me try to figure it out.
I keep them with PH 8.2 but the water is pristine in an established 90 gal tank
My primary objection about UG filters is that excessive organic material in the gravel filter can interfere with medicine if a tank becomes sick. My preference is for an external canister filter because it offers a higher flow rate, allows for easy swapping of new media, and is very simple to isolate and disinfect the canister. Keeping gravel in a tank without a UG filter can be cleaner and easier to maintain. Apologies, but with all that grime inside of them, UG filters are also unattractive. A dirty gravel medium is ideal for the spawning and growth of parasites and Columnaris bacteria, and a clean tank is a healthy tank. My tanks are for easily maintaining the health of my fish, especially if a tank gets sick. Having to tear down a UG filter is horrible to boot.

Minute 7:21 🤯you said planearia ? Really this fish eat that ?
About 5 weeks ago I put 12 CPDs in a 10 gallon QT. After 2 weeks 3 died over the course of a week. They’ve been stable and active. I’m planning on putting them in a planted 20 gal long with some neon tetras and albino corys. I was going to get 12 more. Do you think I could do that? I’d QT first for a month.
I don't listen to anyone wearing a suit.
When you see a video knocking down something that has been effective decades, especially if it is also cheap, just check first who/what they are promoting and/or selling before accepting their opinion.
Can anybody tell me what was the final solution for the planaria outbreak @ 12:50 ish ? I replayed it a couple times but can't seem to get it.
