  This movie was like a revenge of the creator toward the community. Many viewers back then weren’t happy with the TV ending of Eva, which led to a series of chaos, and some even sent death threats and painted red paint on the writer’s front door. So he decided to create a movie of an alternate timeline where everything is fucked up at the end and traumatised everyone

It merged the consciousness of everyone on earth, essentially causing all good and bad thoughts to cancel out. This is why we see shinji at peace in the show’s ending. The movie is here to show us what happened during the process.
