Jake, this would have been way more useful if you showed ppl how those intake runners should be removed and refitted
Let me know if you need a test mule for a 3.6 :)
This is the best and most comprehensive explanation I have seen on the IMS bearing and it's associated issues, thank you. I have had a 2006 2.7 Boxster without problems, a 2004 911 C4s which had an engine replaced at 49,000 miles, this car was worked hard. My 2003 Boxster 3.2s had the IMS bearing replaced as a precaution at 95000 miles.
You're welcome. Glad it helped.
Nicely done! Great to these testimonials.
Glad you like them!
What! I had no idea! Very informative and I’ll stick to my OEM ones..I have Ohlins r/t on my C2 3.6 manual and love it and this shows, again, that the mod path is not that straightforward 😅 Thanks!
Jake, i just watched a video where lake said not to use either of those 2 products. Only anything with pea is to be used. He clearly said, only use seafome if you wanna blow it up.can you clear this up?
I haven't changed my position. ~Jake Raby

Awesome Engineering!
Congratulations on the R41! I think your sentiment and path is going to be very similar to a lot of 997 owners who just love their cars and have owned them long term. I am going on 15 years ownership of a 2006 997.1 Carrera 4S. Love it like no other car I have owned. When the engine gives up the ghost, it will be a rebuild and Raby R40+ at the top of the list. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼👍🏼
I've taken his M9x engine building class and Raby is the truth. A wealth of knowledge and expertise!
You're the best Jake ! Thanks for your efforts Sir !
Von Shitzenpants must have been browning his undies all day in court today.
Is this one of your motors? Or stock?
the original engine was not.
Any updates on this Jake?
But wait, there's more. Act now and you can get a second bearing absolutely free..
Hi again, I just bought 7 months ago, a 2006 Cayman 14,000 miles. Should I remove the bearing seal, like it is suggested on some U tube videos? Thanks
Wow, how simple! Thank you Sir!
What is garage queen status? In my search for a Boxster, I am seeing most cars with 2000-3000 miles per year of age. Very few with even 5000 miles/year. Compare that with the american average of 12-14000 miles/year.
It's cars that never get driven. Cars that sit in garages or storage for months even years without being exercised.
Are the 1.8 the same as the 1.7?
Why take the time to shoot the video, but NOT do it on a real engine? For those of us actually doing the procedure, this isn't very helpful.
How do you feel about 1.8s? Not sure if that's a VW only fitment or if Porsche used them, too?
So much knowledge 🤯 i was so looking forward to getting a 996, i am so worried now:(
Most of the 2006 were built in late 2005!!!
hello Mr Raby...I bought a 2002 911 automatic in 2018 with 115k miles... like new... I parked it in garage and since 2018 I have only driven 1 time around block. ..I just checked oil filter and not even a sliver of foreign anything in it... Should i install your solution, and is it possible with an automatic transmission to do in car?
Storing your car for this length of time and not exercising it regularly is one of the worst things you can do for these cars. Your car should be inspected for cylinder bore scoring among other things... and, yes, if it has the original 6204 IMS bearing, I would immediately change it out with and IMS Solution. Doesn't matter if it's a manual transmission or Tiptronic.
What do you recommend for the 987.2 2.9? It is a 9A1 and not an M97 like you refer to in the video, but it does have port injection like the M97 instead of DFI the other 9A1s have.
I was sorta surprised that you didn't mention PEA additives, as virtually every Porsche article/video regarding fuel I have seen has talked about the importance of this chemical in regards to keeping the combustion chamber and the injectors as a whole clean, but in reading the comments you do mention the importance of using a top tier gas, specifically Shell, which I understand to definitely hava PEA, ie. Techron, as at least a part of it's additive mix, maybe all of it. SO I have a couple of questions: I live out in the country, and do not have close access (like within 20 miles) of any of the fuels considered to be top tier. If I am using non-top tier fuel, do you think that I should be adding a PEA additive, maybe just a bit, when I fill up, or perhaps some Seafoam? the closest top tier station to me is a Phillips 66 stattion. Do you know if they use a PEA additive? And finally, adjacent to this station is a Murphy (Walmart) station, and they offer an additive package mix at the pump. Do you have any idea what this additive is, and if it's any good or not? Thanks.
Our advice is to make the 20 mile trip (which is good exercise for your Porsche) to closest the Shell and use their V-Power Premium 93 product which we've tested to have good repeatable results. Chevron Premium with Techron is also a good choice. We do not recommend using cheap non-TopTier gasoline with these cars. Some people are surprised that we don't recommend buying cheap gasoline along with pouring an additive in the fuel. Your best course of action is making the long trip and getting fuel with the proper formula and concentration of fuel additive from the start.
Mr Raby=how to make money from german garbage
Where does autocross fit into the "track" category? I typically do short races < 60s. I'm running 200TW tires with a little over 2 degrees of camber. Thanks!
Same rules and risks apply Robert.
I lucked into a '99 C2 manual for free. It had been disassembled for an IMS bearing replacement and the owner died. I installed a new IMS bearing despite the old one being perfect, as well as replacing the RMS and AOS. At first I thought the car was dumb, I couldn't understand why people like it. I was driving it very carefully and mellow, it wasn't fun. Then I started driving it more spiritedly, now I get it. Initially I was planning to assemble it and sell it, now I'm having second thoughts because it just runs and drives so magnificently.
We're seeing more and more of the original dual row bearings fail. While your old bearing may seem "perfect", a 25 year old ball bearing will have more rolling resistance over a fresh bearing. Usually bearing failure goes quick without warning. Replacing them proactively is the best course of action. And, if you don't want to worry about it, purchase the plain bearing IMS Solution from LN Engineering.
Thanks, a very useful explanation
Glad it was helpful!
Had a 00 Boxster that gave up the ghost due to ims bearing failure. Wish I’d known about this issue before purchasing. The car had just over 50 thousand miles. This was several years ago btw.
Dear , how can I inspect which bearing I have with an Endoscope you are showing. I have an registered 07/2005 997 Carrera 3.6L.
Check the built date and if it's late 2005 like November then you are safe because you have a 2006 car..
Thank you very much for the valuable information. Do the Durametric numbers/values in “actual values” oscillate or jump during the test or they should hold steady?
Water temps for this run would have been interesting
Thanks Jake, can you explain a bit more how short shifters contribute to this type of engine failure?
What material are the cylinders made of? Steel?
Aluminum.
Do you have partners in Europe that also do this process? Thank you
What it means is when you play stupid games, you win stupid prices. Glad you found it. Hopefully you've learned your lesson.
Jake can you recommend a good shop in the Cincinnati area that can do my ims
What about the 964/993 style rubber mounts (non fluid filled).
Nice insight video. Great job, short, clean and to the point. Thanks for posting.
what is your prep process to clean and coat the cases ? is that a dow magnesium type outer coating? soda blasting etc?
If I had another hand I would give you a pat on the back
Wow this is the best ims failure I ever saw
GL6 oils are a big step forward from GL5, especially in terms of thermal breakdown.
Awesome Jake Appreciate your delving into making Porsche the best!
Man what doesn’t go bad on these cars?
Some how everyone's cars seem to make it well over 100k, but if you watch enough videos, you'd expect it to blow up around every corner. Just drive the car and enjoy it. Don't buy in to the fear bait.
Is the start up noise due to the guides, chains or tensioners wear or failure? Or a combination?
Tensioners should hold oil pressure with engine off. They go bad and bleed out oil when not in use and cause the rattling on cold start until they see oil pressure again.

Hi Jake, I’m hoping you may be able to help me. I have a 1998 2.5 Porsche Boxster 986 with a ECM running DME 5.2.2 I am having a problem accessing actual values from the ECM. I can read fault codes and clear them. The diagnostic tools I’m using are the Icarsoft CRMax and the Durametric. Neither are able to access the actual values although they are designed to do so. Is this something you may have encountered before. I’m in the West of Ireland and have limited access to help here. Thank you for reading this.
You should contact Durametric regarding the inability to access live data from the ECU. You're not alone, some people have experienced what you're going through. Good luck!
@@RennvisionbyTheKnowledgeGruppe Thanks for taking the time to reply. I’ve already done this and also to the retailer who sold me the unit. No reply from Durametric. Sent the mail to them on 10th of January. Shockingly bad service.
Try this… lock and unlock the door to see if it will start communicating
@@RennvisionbyTheKnowledgeGruppe do you mean try locking and unlocking via the key or via activations on the diag tool. Have already tried all the activations and they are responding
Just one trick... with the keyfob, lock and unlock the car. This will sometimes help to get the car communicating with the Durametric.
