Hey! We can recommend 3 options for great synthesizers to use with the TalkStar - On the more affordable end there is the Novation MiniNova or the Korg microKORG and on the more expensive end there is the Moog Sub37. Byron Chambers uses the Yamaha DX100 which is also great but hard to find in good condition. Also, the DX100 is from the early 80's so they are quite fragile and hard to program. Hope this helps!!!

If you have ever tried the TalKStar and compared the sound to an MXR talkbox, you would understand why it is so much better for synth talkboxing. We always suggest the MXR as a great affordable talkbox to learn, it does the job - BUT for those who want the best sound can choose a professional quality talkbox. TalkStar is a higher cost due to the quality of all the components, and made in the USA by hand., - AND comes with the Talkbox Master Class for those just starting or wanting to improve their skills. No mic plugged in. Just headphone out and 9v power supply. And if you think it’s a mic, then there is no actual output for the sound😮

There is no mic because we're just showing how to make a talkbox patch. You can't see in the video but I have a tube in my mouth from a TalkStar talkbox, which is what the Micro is plugged into. The talkbox is amplifying the sound through a tube into my mouth, thern I'm shaping ther words and what you're hearing is the result from my mouth like I'm singing with synthesizer. Once again - this is NOT vocoder!!!

The tube is what brings the synth tone to your mouth where you shape the words, so yes you need it to make that Zapp sound. Vocoder is a very different thing, and the MicroKorg has a built in vocoder with a mic - this video is about making a patch to use with a talkbox.

For the patch I use i kept my portamento at 10 and Vibrato between 64-65. Gives you that DX100 vibe. I think my vibrato was set at 64 when I had my MicroKorg.

Sorry, we don't have one of those in house. However if you follow the basics of making this patch for the MiniNova you could apply it to the Deep Mind. Any simple monophonic sawtooth wave patch will sound pretty good for talkbox, especially with the TalkStar!! Also - make sure ALL effects are off (reverb, delay, chorus etc)

Yes, it's for an outboard talkbox. The MiniNova has a vocoder built in, a very different thing.

Hi. Does that skinnier end piece come with the tube set? Or is that a Mr. Talkbox custom? Looks way more comfortable in the mouth than other vids of talk boxes I've seen with the large tube. Thanks, Ron

Hey Ron - The TalkStar comes with our tube set, which includes one 6 foot tube at 5/8" diameter and two 6 inch "step-down" mouth tubes at 1/2" diameter. Yes, it is much easier to articulate your words with this smaller diameter and our research discovered there is almost no frequency loss when stepping down the tube size at the end!! Hi! Great video! I'm thinking of diving into the talk box world.I'm a keyboard player and have a nova. I'm confused if a mic is needed. Can I go direct out into a mixer/Pa or direct out into my daw. interface? Is a mic required? Because the sound out of the tube needs to be micd at your mouth right? The great Talk Star 'The Test" vid of Mr. Talkbox looks like he's going direct? He's not using a mic. Any help his appreciated. Thanks, Ron

Hey Ron - Think of talkbox as you would a singer / natural human voice. The tube from the TalkStar sends the synth signal into your mouth which is then modulated by your mouth and returned back out as speech / singing whatever is played on the keyboard - so YES you need a microphone just like a singer, when you need to be amplified on stage OR to record the performance into your DAW. There is no such thing as going direct with talkbox - In our "Test" video with Mr. Talkbox - it was only being picked up by the camera because the TalkStar is so loud that you really do not need a mic to play / practice. Hey @SubRaider - there are many synths that sound great wit the TalkStar. In this video Mr. Talkbox is using the vintage Yamaha DX100, a classic used by Roger Troutman as well. More modern synths are the Novation MiniNova, Korg MicroKorg, Moog Sub37 that all sound amazing and we have custom patches for them in our Talkbox Master Class that comes free with a TalkStar!!!

You don't need to worry about that at all. No royalty will ever be - or could never be collected for using a synth patch.
