Bad advice and really bad reasoning to support it. "The producer wanted...", "It isn't up to you to...". Screw all that. That's more of an ethical, authoritarian argument and has nothing to do with sound or aesthetics or technique. Get your ears trained, listen to what you're doing! Record your mixes and listen back to them. If it sounds good it is good. It's your mix!

Check 0 - always look first on the mixer section and make sure which deck is playing. You dont wanna hit the cue button on the playing track, there is no recovery from that

Looks to me like he's chopping in a small sound from the new song to tease it and he is applying an effect to change the tone of the sound. I think he is trying to remove the chunky part at the end and just make it more of a stab. (my guess would be an echo and change times, but chopping it out quick)

Im sure James Hype knows you can do it that (boring) way. But there's also something called the show factor. His whole performance is based on it. Imagine him playing without him going crazy, just standing there having a cup of tea while he's at it the same dull way you are in this video. Nobody would even care about him. So your advice of doing this the easy way, is shit. Doing it the easy way will not sell out venues for thousands of people. A massive part of being a DJ, is show. Otherwise DJ's would not be on the stage for everybody to gaze at and be tucked away somewhere not to be seen.
