The Watch King

The Watch King

Welcome to The Watch King. I created this channel to talk about watches. I think getting into watches is a fantastic hobby, to be able to create wonderful content and be proud of it. There is so much fun in collecting too. I got into watches not because of any family member or relative, but because I personally enjoyed it. I just saw an automatic movement and got entranced from there. I never knew automatic watches can be so mindblowing. I also always thought the wealthy can get into watches, and once I started this channel, it really opened up my point of view. Thanks for each and everyone of you. You all are the best watch enthusiasts out there!

Guccl watches are not made in China. They have their own factory in Switzerland, and for a fashion brand, most of the models seem quite well made.

You're spot on. I've had the same thoughts recently about my ceramic Pepsi as well. It's a beautifully refined piece, to the point where it's a bit sterile. Yes, this is the result of modern manufacturing and materials but it's missing substance. Only time will tell how it will patina over time with daily wear, but it absolutely won't age like it's aluminum bezel predecessors. I'm really thinking about picking up a 1675 to live along side the modern version as it has all the charm of a vintage piece. Great topic to hit!

I have to disagree. I do not think Rolex wants customers with money. Thier watches are not that expensive compared to other luxury brands. Rolex want to be associated with a wealthy active lifestyle. They want to sell there customers on this idea. If you have that Rolex you are going towards a lifestyle of luxury and activity. They are selling you on having a piece of that.

At this point in time with how it's going with Rolex, I rather but a nice replica or a microbrand than a genuine Rolex watch. 7000-8000 €/$ for a simple steel oyster perpetual is just insane. It's all snobbery and pretense. You should thank God to be allowed to buy one of their base model watches. But at the same time they profit from shady celebrities and criminals with dirty money who buy them.

This is a new phenomenon, I remember a time when anyone could walk into a Rolex AD and buy whatever they wanted off the shelf. The shortage came along with the popularity of Rolex on social media and with people buying them as a status symbol and not appreciating what it meant to own a fine timepiece. This started the flipping culture and the reluctance for an AD to sell to everyone. I walked into my local AD and expressed interest in an Explorer 2, I had it in my hands a year later. I did not wear a suit, I was wearing a t-shirt and shorts as we were near the beach. I am not young, almost 60 and the AD chatted with me and realized that I actually have a passion for watches and I was not just trying to make a quick buck. Do you have a Rolex? Did you buy it from an AD at retail or on the grey market?

Its just not that. An SA here at an AD in Atlanta was fired for selling me a Polar Explorer cause the owner said she had zero judgement in selling to someone who looked like me. I was a poor ambassador for the brand even if I had the money for several watches with ease. A fellow SA of her’s posted the whole story on the Rolex sub Reddit about 2 months after it happened. This was summer of last year.

You’re so deep in the watch nerd world that your title sounds crazy 🤣, it’s a luxury brand, like Omega, Breitling, IWC, JLC….. it’s not intended for poor people, no brand, company or anything is intended for poor people, only religious institutions, charities and government help. Unless you’re referring to the Hans Wilsdorf foundation 🤣 good luck with that! First world living got us disconnected with reality, tradition is, you gift yourself a Rolex or Montblanc after you felt that you’ve achieved something, they don’t have to cater to you lol.

I call my Rolex’s store of value pieces. An investment is something bought low and can be sold higher than the purchase price. Store of value is exchanging one form of value (money)that will lose some of its value, for something (a Rolex)that will store the initial value for a later date to be re-exchange back to the initial value (money).

It’s called hitting your target market. One day perhaps you’ll learn about it in school. Rolex goes after the market who can afford their timepieces. It’s not that they don’t want younger buyers, it’s just that most can’t afford their products. So they go after who can rather than spend on expanding to those who cannot. And it’s an approach that has worked for generations as each new one views the brand as aspirational. Sorry kid, the Crown is the real King. Keep producing though, you have some potential in terms of interesting content. Your research was solid.

Where does poor start... I live in Europe and I see alot of people in jobs that you wouldn't associate with the money to own a Rolex. Some people, mostly migrants, really go out of their way for these status symbols. One bedroom apartment for a family of four but a Rolex and used Mercedes-Benz oder BMW. Or they have restaurants and small shops that make a loss year after year, if you know what I mean...

They want to advertise to the customer base that can afford their watches. They produce 1 million watches a year and advertise to the market that will purchase 1 steel watch as their only watch for their lifetime doesn’t boost sales. Marketing to the higher net worth population that can afford to purchase multiple watches and precious metal watches allows them to sell their annual production.

  • @ZachEller
    @ZachEller14 күн бұрын

They're marketing to where their target audience is. I don't think they care who buys their product, its more a question of who is interested in the product and who can afford it. Same reason toys are advertised on kids channels. There is also a decent amount of fabricated exclusivity with Rolex which is another conversation entirely.

  • @nikolastojanov8749

Rolex is where it is because they are selling a status symbol. They want a guy who can buy a gold sub on a whim today, wear it for a month, get bored then buy platinum day date next month. They dont want a guy eho saves 10 years to buy a steel datejust as a reward. Because status symbols of the rich lose their luster if rich people see that poorer people can afford the same brand. If that multimilionaire who drives a ferrari sees a guy with a honda civic also wearing a rolex, there is a chance he loses interest in rolex and moves up to Patek or similar. It might sound sad or causes angee in people, but this is the science of marketing. It is a very cruel cutthroat world. Rolex sponsors only ELITE aports. Not sports for the masses exactly for this reason.

Most Rolex watches seem to appreciate by at least 5-10% in the used market if not doubled, unlike other luxury brands like Omega, Tudor etc which hardly retain 70-80% of their value just after purchase. This could be due to the exclusivity or artificial demand that Rolex generates or god knows what but definitely works in its favor. Although I haven't invested much time or money into watches nor do I intend to, I can't label buying a Rolex today as financially stupid

This video is essential because it opens the door to a meaningful discussion about brand value perception. Each alloy name represents the specific mix of elements it contains. 316L and 904L are the same anywhere. Rolex isn't doing something special with "their 904L or 316L." If they did, it would not be called 304L or 316L. When ppl buy luxury items, they often attempt to split hairs about what they perceive to be intricacies that differentiate their luxury items from non-luxury items. Often, they realize only a small percentage of luxury is involved in the manufacturing and developing of their luxury items. For example, you struggled to clearly define the difference between the watches. Why? Because the difference is nearly negligible. Sure, 904L has a bump and more anti-corrosive benefits over 316L. However, the difference between the alloys does not justify a $10,000+ price difference. It's all a marketing ploy. Ultimately, we all need to come to terms with the reality that people are spending 10s of thousands of dollars for watches that will inevitably scratch up.

I’ve got an orange 1960 model with and incredibly beautiful chocolate patina and despite its 35mm size it’s one of my most favorite watches of all time and greatly under appreciated one by watch community I believe. I also own a one liner Oysterquartz 17000 and since you love those I’m sure you’d agree that it’s another hugely under appreciated one and for me personally the greatest and the most beautiful Rolex day just ever made , period . I do enjoy your passion and taste - brilliant

You're absolutely right. Watches are, lets face it, obsolete. Anyone who needs to tell the time can do so with their phone, so if you are interested in a cool watch, you will likely buy a cool watch. Maybe you like the idea of owning a Citizen EcoDrive or a Casio Edifice, but nothing really beats the cool factor of a little box of gears. There is very little justification for a cheap watch just to tell the time since your phone does that for you. if you want to get a less accurate mechanical watch, you can just double check the time on your phone.

Cartier is hypocritical hype now and also because Patek & AP are pretty much unobtainable even if you have the money. ALL KZreadrs I mean ALL of them who jumped on the Cartier bandwagon have all said at one point or another it’s more of a jewler or fashion brand, not a real watch brand. Hodinkee talked shit about Cartier, Revolution Watch, Roman Sharf, and many others talked negatively about Cartier at one point. Now they All of a sudden speak about Cartier as if they are experts in the brand. I always say beware of vintage Cartier. Too many fakes from the 70’s & 80’s. Most are quartz. Most Cartier are either gold plated or gold cases come with steel or gold plated case backs. No consistency with the three Cartier houses, London New York, Paris. Cartier side hustle is in watches. They are more about jewelry.
