absolutely superb ending. kind of reminds me of that saying that the bird on the branch doesn't worry about it breaking, because it trusts in its ability to fly.. I reckon as soon as the rear-seat passenger says 'a bit of this, a bit of that', Ray's on full alert, and certainly by the time the other guy is messing with the radio. he's absolutely okay driving down a dark secluded road, because he knows exactly what he's capable of, so actually has the drop on these two - who I reckon are, at best, just a couple of randoms either looking to turn him over for his car, or for a thrill kill. don't believe it was a hit, because if so they are lambs to the slaughter - they wouldn't be announcing their intentions to someone with his reputation.

Loved this show and absolutely loved the ending. Ray was clearly trying to go straight and live a peaceful life, but these boys went looking for trouble and were unlucky enough to pick the wrong victim. The smile and the little break of the fourth wall tells us those boys are done for. Love it.

People who live that kinda life rarely have a happy ending. So I'm glad Ray got out of the business and settled down to a regular job. I'm also glad the series didn't drag on and ruin what is as a package one of my top two favorite shows ever (my first is true detective series 1).

This ending is so satisfying haha. Keep coming back to watch it again and again. But also, just a perfect portrayal of a morally ambiguous, sociopathic character. Ray isn't a good guy by any means but he has his code & he sticks to it. I think another comment hit it on the head (or maybe Reddit comment) - but this isn't a dude that looks like he loves driving cabs at the end of the show here. It looks like he's instead been fed up with the criminal life and all that entails, some kind of almost burnout-esque feeling. So he's taken a step back and doing something different for a while. But - you gotta wonder - can someone who can kill people so easily, without remorse and without fear - can they really re-adjust to a regular, civilian life? The show kind of hints at this with Ray's cell mate in early S3 - he tells him to his face (probably the only time in the series) that him killing people is fucked. But we see the consequences that guy faces for not being ruthless and remorseless in an environment that calls for it. And so instead now we have Ray at the end of the series, driving cabs, likely not getting up to much danger. It's probably fucking boring for someone like him. Like Ray Liotta at the end of Goodfellas "I get to live the rest of my life like a schmuck".. But then here come a couple of fuckin douchebag amateurs. That have either been put onto him as a hit, or just picked entirely the wrong mark (my theory is the latter). Either way, Ray realises what's going on - but gives them every opportunity to back out. "I'll drop you here" x3... They don't take the bait. Ok. Now he has to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty again. But he's not even mad - he's smiling. He's loving it. He's relishing the return to form and the opportunity to dish out some poetic justice to a couple of scumbags. That's my interpretation of his smile at the end. An absolutely menacing toothy grin. What a show.

I cant believe people assume he dies after this. We literally saw him crash a car previously to overcome basically the same situation. What the show is trying to say here is that ray has seen it all and will see it all again with that smile the whole time.

I know its sketch to keep a show running too long, i just feel like a solid 5 seasons wouldve been great. Also, i hate when networks arent sure what to do with a show, if we had got 12 episodes a season that wouldve been nice too. We got 6 for S1, 11 for S2 & 9 for S3. Few things i wish for the show, isntead lf killing that punk drug dealer at the end, have ray hunt him down so he could find Zoe, its so upsetting she died especially off screen. And 2, im sad Dave died in the end. It felt like Ray was building a small crew, but he kept having buddies die, or in Freddies case, betrayal. One thing that was perfect though was Ray slowly getting better at handling his emotions. Instesd of holding them in, he slowly starts crying more and more in passing episodes. R.I.P Zoey R.I.P Dave R.I.P Vinnie R.I.P Brucey

Just finished watching all three seasons of Mr In between, possibly the best show of its genre ever, criminally under rated.
Fun Fact: This actually happened to the actor/writer Scott Ryan when he was driving a cab for a living.
Fitting that despite the number of times I saw that smile throughout the show, this final instance was the only one that gave me the chills. 👏👏
