Even though he had won the week before at Sonoma, this truly kicked off the Summer of Smoke. Him winning a road race was no shock, but dominating at a track where JGR had historically struggled mightily was stop-the-presses stuff.

What's weird about this is that one of the drivers in this race, Philip Morris, actually comes from the same town Chris Chan comes from, no joke, so believe it or not a guy from Chris Chan's town nearly rubbed shoulders with Dale Earnhardt Jr and Elliott Sadler. Chris Chan also went to High School with Denny Hamlin. He drives car number 84 sponsored by "Carolina Shoe".

I know the race was shortened due to the 1 AM curfew due to the rain delay, but the law is the law. Today, they now have a countdown clock for tracks that do not have lights. The countdown clock does not matter at most tracks, but Charlotte, Pocono, Dover, Darlington, Indy, and Martinsville have curfews.

I guess the yellow line rule was subjective in 2001. I never seen so many cars almost run down into the grass at Daytona.
