Brad Palmer

This channel will feature some of the more memorable sports stories and features reported by Brad Palmer during his 40-year broadcast career in Chicago.

Known as "The Professor" by his viewers, Brad was voted "Illinois Sportscaster of the Year" a record 9 times by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. He joined WBBM-AM (CBS) the day it became Chicago's first all-news station in 1968 and went on to become Sports Director and sport anchor of both morning and afternoon drive-time.

In 1977, he also became the color analyst on the Chicago Bears broadcasts, alongside play-by-play man Joe McConnell.

In 1985, Brad moved to WLS-TV (ABC). It was his weekly analysis of upcoming Bears' games in front of a chalk board that prompted the nickname "The Professor". Brad went 14-2 predicting Bears' games in 2005. He went 10-1 both straight-up and against the point spread in the playoffs, and, on that note, he retired. He and his wife, Patti, now live on Cape Cod, MA.

Pippen had his best year ever that season. This type of behavior kind of reminds me of an NFL game where Steve Young flipped out on George Seifert. There were years of resentment behind it, but luckily the team put it behind them.

Jim Finks the “Worst Scout ever"?. List of Hall of famers scouted and drafted by Jim Finks (he was the greatest talent evaluator in NFL history: Walter Payton, Mike Singletary, Dan Hampton, Jimbo Covert, Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, Alan Page, Paul Krause, Carl Eller, Ron Yary, Mick Tinglehoff, Bud Grant, Wille Roaf, Sam Mills, Ricky Jackson, Morton Anderson

I had the priviledge of covering scores of outstanding people during my broadcasting career, but no one impressed me more than Jim Finks. He had a special presence about him. I never heard anyone speak ill of him. He had a nice way of getting his point across. I heard him take issue with a columnist that wrote something Finks didn't like. He simply told him that "he was disappointed that you would write that." He also made it known that he didn't like some of my commentary during an 8-game losing streak. He said, "Brad, you're not a 'homer', are you?" I told him I was a 'homer' in that I wanted the Bears to do well, but I'm not a 'house' man." I think Jim respected that. (I was the color/commentator on the Bears' radio broadcasts from 1977-1984. The Bears moved from WBBM to WGN in 1985, a year after Jim Finks resigned from the Bears rather than work for Michael McCaskey.)

Jim Finks was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995 after a 30-year stellar career as the President and GM /architect/scout/talent evaluator of the Purple People Eater/Bud Grant Vikings era, the 1985 Bears team (we know how great they were), and the Saints (Jim Mora era). During his 7 years with the Saints, they made the playoffs for the first time in their history numerous times and they won more games in that 7 year span with the exception of the 49ers. He was selected by the NFL owners selection committee to be the next the NFL commissioner after Rozelle retired, but because of 10 bone head new NFL owners at the time in 1989 (Jerry Jones, Debartalo, and others) , it did not happen. And he was a very very good QB with the Steelers who at that time had very very mediocre defenses. Paul Brown said Jim Finks is a great QB and if I didn't have Otto Graham as my QB, I would love to have him on my team. Jims Finks told the exact truth as to why Johnny U was cut. If he wasn’t, he would have been Jim Finks’ backup.

It's really a shame that with such a great defensive football mind this guy was such a tool. Buddy Ryan was a miserable, hateful, spiteful bully. He was an embarrassment. He was jealous of anyone who was better than him (Ditka) and very, very insecure. I couldn't STAND the media's fascination with him, but I did understand it. The circus clown always get the videos and pictures taken of him. He was the NFL version of the Jerry Springer and Maury shows put together. Let's see what the fool will do and say today.

There was nothing insecure about Buddy Ryan, nor was he jealous of anyone. He was not miserable, hateful, or a bully. He marched to his own drum and his players loved him for it.

Henri Richard was truly amazing in this series...he was on fire every time he stepped on the ice. The Hawks were also a great team. Look at the lineup. Hull, Mikita etc. In the end it was only fitting that Jean Beliveau went out as a champion in his last game.

Buddy Ryan and Mike Ditka were both strong A-type personalities. The couldn’t get along because they were too much alike. Both were good at what they did and contributed to the Bears winning a Super Bowl. Both were motivators but they didn’t agree on much and often clashed.

I lived in the Chicago area in 1979 and still do. At that time from word of mouth, I heard, those there for the Disco Demolition were getting bored during the ball game. It was the first game of a scheduled double header, in which the second game was obviously cancelled and forfeited to the opposing team.
