    Hi Alex. Any reason why you don't use DaVinci color management? In a nutshell it's similar to your workflow. Just curious 😅

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp2 күн бұрын

    Yeah, I like knowing exactly what's going on and that things are being converted correctly and the way I want it to. So working this way to me, has always been the easiest. I know that DaVinci can automate some of this but I simply don't trust it enough and sometimes use tools and other conversions and steps that I don't see work as smoothly in the Color Managed workflow. That said, that's just my personal preference, so if the color managed workflow works great for others, then I put absolutely no shame towards that :-)

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp3 күн бұрын

    Thank you! My exposure technique is a combination of 3 things and depends on how much time I give myself to expose but I use Zebras set to 52 +/- 2, exposing to the right at +1.3-1.7 and sometimes just making sure I'm not clipping the highlights. If I have enough time, I go for zebras, if not then overexposing and not clipping the highlights is usually my go to. I find that I have a ton of flexibility with the FX3 though, the dynamic range is helping a ton

    Any reason why you would use an "object mask" here and not a "person mask"? You clearly have "object" selected?

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp3 күн бұрын

    I find that the object mask works better in almost all scenarios and the person mask usually requires a lot more work, at least when I apply it. So that’s the reason 😊 If you find it easier to use the person mask there’s essentially no difference in applying them but how good they are at selecting the subject in different instances (again I don’t find the person mask to work very well at any time but perhaps it’s just for me and my clips)

  • @Zisuen

    I've watched many tutorials at this point and a lot of the professionals use Color Space Transform differently, 1.(Slog3 to Davinci WG Inte.), 2-5 (Nodes for exp, pri, wb, cont, ect..) and then the last Node is "Davinci WG Inter" to Rec709/Gamma2.4. I believe the reason behind this is that Davinci WG is a bigger space then S-Log/C-Log/etc.. therefore giving you a lot more range while color grading your footage, then if you were color grading your footage in S-Log What do you think about it ?

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp7 күн бұрын

    The amount of range you’re getting is not that much because slog is already a large space and you’re not getting more dynamic range than is already captured. However, working in DWG/DI helps to make more precise adjustments are you’re working in a larger color space. That’s what I do myself but didn’t include it in a beginner video to avoid too much confusion 😊

    @@AlexBjorstorp Makes sense, I found your tutorial great, perfect explanations :) Will try to implement it in my work-flow. I was wondering I'm on a hunt for some new LUTs, do you have or plan to make some Davinci WG Inter. LUTs ? Most LUTs I find are Rec709.

  • @AlexBjorstorp

    I'd love a similar type of video for cine4 as going full S-log 3 is a bit daunting for me as of right now with such a flat profile and everything that comes with it. With cine 4 I'm still able to monitor the colors somewhat ok whilst still shooting instead of relying fully on post to fix it.

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp8 күн бұрын

    The workflow would be exactly the same to be honest. The only difference will be the conversion in this case and of course the flexibility of the footage. When I get my hands on my own FX3 I can try and make time to test the Cine4 a bit but personally I never shoot anything but LOG, so I don't use it in practice :-) But the workflow as said remains the exact same maybe just less of everything if the clip doesn't need as much 🙌🏻 Shooting in LOG you can always turn on Gamma Assist, which will help you monitor the colours in Rec.709 while still shooting in LOG btw :-)

    Personally I think that resorting to the use of LUTs is a failure for those who have to produce color. The LUT is a shortcut that limits the quality of the color correction stream.

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp8 күн бұрын

    A bit of a strong opinion but fair enough mate. LUTs can be a great way to a much faster workflow and getting consistent colours on throughout more than just 1 project. For myself I’ve created all my LUTS from scratch, which also means I know exactly what they do. Having to recreate what they do for every project and video I do would be far too time consuming compared to working with LUTs that brings me closer to the result I want, faster. But hey, we all got our own workflows and opinions! If you want to grade from scratch every time I have respect for that 😊

    Hi Alex - Besides Social Media (Instagram, Facebook, etc), where is the best place to showcase all of the videos you have produced and edited for various companies in order to show perspective companies what type of work you could do? Should you set up a website and divide it up by category such as the type of industry and then display all of the videos within each category which are linked to a dedicated KZread channel for your portfolio? If a website should be used, are there any specific hosting platforms such as SquareSpace or Wix that you recommend which will not require the videographer to have to know web design in a lot of detail to avoid such a steep learning curve which might slow down the overall progress of actually being able to display your portfolio?

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp9 күн бұрын

    Hey Mike, I definitely recommend having a website. It not only looks professional it also is your own space, whereas IG, FB etc. could shut down or close your access any day. I think it's great to set up a website and then either make project sets between industries or depending on how many projects you have, set them up in a gallery with a page for each that explains a bit more about the project, scope and result. Connecting to VIMEO or KZread is then great for the videos. KZread is probably the easiest with a dedicated channel because it's free. I used to be on Squarespace and it's completely fine. Easy to set up but it comes with a lot of limitations if you want to customise a lot. I haven't tried Wix but heard great things. I switched to Shopify but only because I needed something that was more store-focused and Squarespace was lacking too many features in that regard or making it too expensive. If you just want to host your portfolio and perhaps have a About and Pricing page, then either would be fine and I'd proabably just go with the cheaper option myself.

    Can you go more in depth into the third step? I feel like we need to understand the science behind this, but other than that holy crap man, this was extremely technical and amazing, and just exactly what someone needs to become a professional. I am going to subscribe.

  • @AlexBjorstorp
    @AlexBjorstorp9 күн бұрын

    I honestly don't know the exact science behind it but in practice taking everything into DaVinci Wide Gamut & Intermediate, allows you to grade everything in the same space, with the same color mapping. This is especailly useful if you're grading clips from multiple different cameras and want to make sure it's the same across all your clips. Besides that, I can personally see that I have a little bit more wiggle room with certain things like exposure and contrast when working in DaVinci Wide Gamut / Intermediate compared to just working in the LOG profile from my camera. However, these small differences will most likely only be really useful to have on small nitty gritty things. So, whether or not one chooses to use the DWG is totally fine in my opinion. I always do it myself but I also often work across camera brands and log profiles between drones and cameras. Some of the more professional colourists here on KZread like Cullen Kelly and Darryn Mostyn might have some more technical explanations of it, I'm not sure :-)
