what gopro mount are you using?
Scrambling on greasy rock and loose surfaces looks extremely dangerous. Is it? Or does experience in fact give you significant protection?
I was talking to a member of the mountain rescue team that I was going to walk up Snowdon. He told me I should go up the Crib Goch route which, trusting him, I did. As it was my first time up the mountain I didnt realise it was a knife edge scramble until I got there, Cheers Tony!!!Needless to say I took the Pyg track down.
Brilliant and really helpful video - I did the Snowdon Horseshoe as an 18 year old with an outdoor pursuits club at school... 35 years later I'm looking to revisit but maybe in a less bold way so having the routes explained so clearly is really helpful! Thank you! (Im thinking I'll try Rhyd Ddu)
love this site . I use it regular for making my KZread campfire cooking videos. as the setting is perfect. I dint really have a problem with dogs barking. the only problem I had was I didn't book online as i have been visiting this site for many years and you didn't need to book however the last few times I have visited I have had to move off because the site was fully booked not a problem for me as I know many alternative sites in the area. I strongly recommend booking first before turning up. here is a video i filmed there. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mad2lo-nlKi8qsY.html
This has always been an issue. The increased volume of visitors due to the rising popularity of hiking and mountaineering post-pandemic means incidents are occurring more often. I was atop the nearby Pen Llithrig y Wrach recently with binoculars and was astounded by how busy Tryfan looked. Additionally, while apps like AllTrails are useful, they can sometimes make certain areas or routes seem less challenging than they actually are. You can’t just rock up, press Start and follow your phone when you’re in some of these places; basic skills and forward planning are essential. The Instagram photos don’t show the hazards.
Anyone on the Mountain without the Right equipment should be Billed for their rescue and Banned. Simples !
Tryfan was my favourite mountain to scramble up when I lived in that area, thirty years ago. I've been up it in all weathers, and been stuck near the top in a storm, hunkering down in a survival bag, as well as in glorious sunshine, with the most amazing views.... but it is dangerous for the unwary and inexperienced, when the weather can switch so quickly and you can easily lose your bearings when the clouds come down. I nearly went off a cliff in the Carneddau once, rushing down in a mist before it got dark. Even back then, we used to see people trying to climb up Tryfan (and Crib Goch) in flip flops, with no equipment or emergency weather gear. I dread to think what it's like these days, as more people head there.
Terrible pronunciation. It’s not TRE-VAN, it’s better to try and rhyme it with ‘driven’.
When I climbed Tryfan a bloke broke his leg not far from the cannon. One of my best memories was being sat above him and getting soaked by the rain coming off of the Seaking as it came in to winch him out.
Have you a downloadable map for this route please
Do you think it could be the Quackcine??
thank you
Groups of people turning up in flip flops
The crux looked interesting... I'm sure I'd want a rope on nowadays, just to be safe!
Great walk , throughly enjoyed it. Great video the drone shots are fantastic
Nice and local but yet to do it !!!
Excellent scramble, took my kids up years ago, the reason more problems is simply more people!
Hi Daniel, Just a note to say how much I've enjoyed your series of scrambling vids. Had to dig into my collection to to find Steve Ashton's book,. During the early nineties along with an old school friend and my brother we must have done most of those you've highlighted. Having been born in N Wales we were up and around Snowdon most weekends either scrambling, climbing or just plain hiking, I've lived in Canada for the 30 years and have climbed in many parts of the world but still have a soft spot for Snowdonia. Shwmae, Dave M
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying the content and it's bringing back some memories! I've just got my hands on an original 1st edition of Ashton's book and there's a few routes in there excluded from the newer editions. So maybe a hidden gem (or a gorse scratcher) coming up on the channel later in the summer :-)
@@thebaldscrambler Mine is the 3rd edition 1992, I do remember us having a rough time !! in the Devil's Kitchen one winter.
It's the only way you can say you've "Done Adam and Eve " ... 😂❤❤❤
I done Snowdon back (Llanberis path - cycling) in 91, climbing a mountain is well out of the question
Went there with an informal group, about 25 yrs ago. Due to a breakdown in communication, I was told this was not a rock climbing trip (I was an experienced hill walker but don't rock climb) but we came to the bottom of a steep rockface and all the gear, ropes etc. came out. I gave it a go but nearly dislocated my shoulder reaching for a hold (it audibly snapped back when I let go and was sore for weeks!). I then left the others and scrambled up by an easier route, which turned out fine, though I was sitting in the car in the freezing cold for 3 hours (no mobiles) while they finished!
70+ years of dysgenics and cultural rot is what went wrong, and media hype surrounding mountaineering. Traditionally in England mountains were considered ugly warts on the land, a blight. But the media tells them to go, so they go.
What are you going on about? I'm from England and literally no one thinks mountains are ugly or a blight on the landscape. Maybe we're not very enthusiastic climbers, but able-bodied people enjoy gentle hikes if they go somewhere mountainous. Places like the Lake District, Peak District, or Snowdonia wouldn't be popular if no one liked the look of mountains. Get a grip 😂
Good work, thanks 👊🏼
Can't climb a ladder, takes on a mountain..
I did a mountain leaders course years ago. Do you think I can convince a group of walkers that they should always carry a map and a compass? No! They know best. Granted the OS app is good but people have become overly reliant on tech.
Great review sir, I’ll consider getting a pair being someone with slightly narrow feet
Daniel -- What climbing experience in your opinion would you need to be able to complete this Grade 3 scramble. Should a climbing party be roped up to a lead experienced climber in case of a fall?
Been up there more times than I can remember in all weather! The one I remember the most was after a snow covered crib goth trip and that night in the pub my mates were let’s do Try-fan tomorrow. I knew it would be tough in winter but covered in ice was one of my scariest climbs of my life! Respect mother nature or get bitten or killed we were so bloody lucky that day but young dumb and full of….👍 stay safe people and the mountains will always be there another day. You may not be so always be prepared to turn back and go to a nice warm pub rather than a cold grave 👍🫣
I cut my teeth as a climber/mountaineer in Snowdonia back in the 80's and Tryfan was always a favourite. Hard, yes. Scary, yes. Your advice to use a mountain guide is excellent. I used a guide a couple of times in the alps and it was an excellent training/learning experience. Thoroughly recommended. Great video with its mix of inspiration, advice and warning. Tryfan is not for beginners but it sure is one of the most awesome and beautiful places on earth when done right.
Hiked up Tryfan in the 90's , me and my brother in law , we went the easy way ! And that was scary !
Yeah ! I think we went the South Route
To many people over estimating their ability and under estimating the mountain. I've seen it many times. Please do your research before you go mountain walking/scrambling and make sure you take the appropriate equipment.
Eryri, please
Good article
5th Tip: Don't forget that Tryfan and most of the surrounding area are a no drone use area, so keep those drone's in your backpack folks, if in doubt check the National Trust land map which shows you exactly where drone use is prohibited in Snowdonia, and on top of that the national park don't allow drone use on any route considered a main and popular route up any of the mountains.
Click Bait title,,,😱 There's nothing wrong with Tryfan, it's the best day out in the country imho, My friend and I, did it several years ago,, I drove from West Yorkshire, we climbed Tryfan, jumped Adam and Eve, did all 3 Glyders, and I drove home again, (it was late June).. Simply one of the best days of my life, and I'll remember every minute for the rest of my life,, 🤙😊
Daniel -- Many thanks for your guidance up the South Ridge of Tryfan. This video should be shown to all Army Cadets the evening before they carry out the ascent. There are many opportunities to do map reading on route. I like your excellent advice to start on the easiest route. The British Army does not appreciate dead Cadets, neither do parents. A sure way to get Court Marshalled! I jumped from Adam to Eve (at the top), but no sooner had I done so, the wind picked up and it was too dangerous for anyone else to have a go. But I'll leave the North Face to the professionals!
North ridge - a nice scramble. I was the only one on Tryfan when I first did it on a weekend in 1981,
The year I was born :-). I was the only person on Tryfan once, it was pouring down though and I was the only one balmy enough to go up there.
If new to scrambling Heather Terrace maybe?
Sure, but the Heather Terrace route ends just over halfway up the South Ridge so scramblers could do that or just go up the South Ridge. I've seen a few folks struggle to find the Terrace but once on it, it's fairly straightforward. Both are easier than the NR, in my opinion.
My favourite mountain in Wales but I wish more people on Instagram and youtube gave advice like this rather than making out that it's just another hike. Just because you've walked up Snowdon doesn't mean you can do tryfan.
All because people are stupid
I am 54 and do not hike or mountaineer in any way shape or form. My son has previously climbed Snowdonia twice and asked me to join him for his third visit. I did ….however having never ever been up any mountain previously I found it a massive struggle. I only got to the top with his help and yes I had cramp coming down as the coming down was absolutely dreadful. He had summited it via a different route to the one we took together, that one being shorter. I had the image that because so many people climb Snowdon every day of the year it wouldn’t be that hard, more of a day out really than it being difficult and dangerous. doubt I will ever try anything like that again for risk of needing to call mountain rescue because I would feel really guilty if I did. My point being is that it is more common now for anyone to do this sort of thing but without really realising the dangers/risks involved and. I am not surprised folks get into trouble pretty quick because we don’t have the knowledge or expertise to stay out of trouble attempting stuff like this.
Great video - full of good information. thank you!
Too right. Never going near the bottom of anything like that. I happen to be sane.
This video seems like an unnecessary scare tactic. I did Tryfan north ridge as a first time scramble to see if I could do crib goch, and it was super easy. Yes if someone decides to do some rock climbing straight up there's a risk. But there's a risk with anything you do.
I'm glad to see someone giving the truth of what tryfan is. It's a mountain not to be taken lightly! I want to do it, but waiting for someone who knows it who wants to go up again. Obv I do think social media is partially to blame, I'm often seeing videos saying "don't go up snowdon/Yr wyddfa go here" but let's not forget there was a walking book which advised it was an easy route and a man following this also died.
I couldn’t believe it the other week when The Guardian published a list of ten lesser known places to head to and put Tryfan on the list. Yes, it’s not Snowdon - but it’s a technical climb or scramble from virtually all directions and not for the inexperienced or ill equipped, if conditions are off. So what’s gone wrong - you have to learn - and social media or mainstream media promoting but not educating is the issue.
I did the Watkins path a few years a go with a dodgy knee and was surprised how many people turned back when the going got tough. Lovely views and personally the best of the routes as has a bit of everything and is relatively quiet.
OK, you drive up the A5 and there it is! If you think you can scramble up it then do try. if it daunts you then leave it alone. Simple! WTF is this 'safety' shit all about these days! And yes I'm sure you've put many an exploratory minded individual off attempting one of the most wonderful scrambling mountains in this country with your scary commentary. Btw Tryfan has one of the easiest getoffs in this country but you ignored that! Don't bullshit the public mate, let them stretch themselves a bit!
My late Dad did this first about 60 years ago! It's definitely on the bucket list🏔🤙hopefully with someone with the experience 👌👍
