In '84, on TV, I saw Reggie hit one out of Tiger Stadium off Juan Berenguer. I don't know the distance but it cleared the roof. It seems like just a few weeks later the Tigers were again on national TV. Al Bumbry of the Orioles hit a line drive off Berenguer's head. A rough month for the pitcher but the Tigers ended up winning the World Series that year.

I was watching when he hit it! Today’s announcers don't rate with the great announcers of yesteryear, like Curt Gowdy 👍

back when the players cared about the all star game - today all we have is ohtanie gambling on baseball - the dumb commissioner is only worried about sticky stuff - instead of the astros cheating and ohtanie betting on baseball - baseball is trash now

Ohtani didn't bet on baseball. With the possible exception of an old time mobster who would be willing to go to jail for more than thirty years and owe millions of dollars to protect a so-called friend? Ippei had a gambling problem and Ohtani was the victim.

Reggie was perfect for his time. It was before cable television, and viewers had limited choices, so we watched this guy evolve into a superstar with soaring confidence and swagger. He became part of the public consciousness. Add iconic and controversial sportscasters like Howard Cosell into the mix, and you have perfect entertainment. Reggie and Howard made sports moments memorable and larger than life at times.

I loved the summer of ‘77. Going to see Reggie play for the Orioles. Does anyone even remember?

  • @richstrobel

I remember because I grew up in Maryland. My Dad is from So. Cal so we also rooted for the Dodgers. Reggie was on the Orioles for one season which was 1976. Yankees and Dodgers fan old enough to remember can tell you he was on the Yankees in '77. Three different pitchers, three first pitch home runs in a World Series game.

@@richstrobel My mistake. Yes it was ‘76. I have an autographed photo of him as an Oriole. Can’t tell you how many people saw it and said that they didn’t know he played for them. But to me, Reggie looked best in an A’s uniform, back in the day. Same with my autographed photo of Bob Gibson pitching in a Mets uniform. He was a pitching coach/instructor.

I was 3 years old in 1971. By 1977 I was more of a real person and Reggie was my hero. I remember watching games on television and I recall you could see the ball. I don't remember everything on television looking like it was covered by a muddy window. Why is all the footage of old games total garbage? Is there any clear footage anywhere?

I always loved watching Reggie bat. He was like a coiled snake ready to strike. Intently watching the ball no movement them wham he uncoiled and drove that ball like no other player. Those were the best times in baseball imo.

Allowed to complete its trajectory, that ball may very well have been one of the longest HRs in the history of the game... I know there are many other worthy candidates, but the fact it was quite a bit toward center.... the SOUND.... and the perfect bat recoil, like a Winchester popping off a round.... regardless, that ball had a family.
