@ThistleAndSea Hi. Their split second cameos in each other’s movies have been going on since Deadpool 2 where Brad Pitt’s face was only shown for a few seconds then in Bullet Train Ryan Reynolds appeared for a few seconds. In this one, there was no cameo but they still mentioned Brad Pitt as the invisible character Keith. 😁

If you're interested, I can tell you a few things, without spoilers, that aren't detailed enough in the film: Galadriel (the Lady of the Light, from the elven word "galad") is a very powerful sorceress who in her millennial life fought many battles (most likely as heavy artillery) against the original dark lord Morgoth, the one who taught Sauron the way to the "dark side". Galadriel and Elrond, the elven king of Rivendell, have telepathic powers, can communicate at a distance and he also has the gift of foresight. Galadriel's daughter married Elrond and therefore Arwen, the one who swears eternal love to Aragorn, is Galadriel's granddaughter. Galadriel's gifts to the company are enchanted and the two daggers given to Merry and Pippin have already been used in combat, as she tells them. the palantir, Saruman's seer stone, is not the only one, there are others (another is kept in the city of Gondor, where Gandalf went to find information about the ring) and looking into it for too long can lead to addiction and folly. Saruman doesn't actually seek the ring for Sauron but he believes he can bend its powers to his will. Pippin comes from a noble family and he is the heir to the title of earl of the shire.

Gandalf the Grey died. I'm not even spoiling it, the movie showed him dropping into an endless abyss, and later Galadriel stated that he fell into "shadow" (which presumably is darkness, a.k.a. death). Wonderful, Tarunpreet! I'm so glad you are enjoying the story! Yes, the breaking of the fellowship and the death of Boromir is hard to watch, but beautiful too in that tragic, heroic way. Tolkien was steeped in the epic stories of the past, and he understood heroic literature very well. So, the day this movie opened in the theaters I took off work to attend an 11:00 AM matinee. I LOVED it so much that I walked out of the screening and straight to the box office to buy a ticket for the next showing! And while I waited for it to start, I sat in the concession area and ate two bratwurst sandwiches. 😋 Just like a hungry hobbit tracking through the wilds, LOL! At 19:17 you ask, "Where is he?" He is on the hill of Amon Hen, the Hill of the Eye. The Men of Numenor built a great stone seat atop the hill, represented in the movie by a throne made of four Eagles with upraised wings. A person sitting in the seat was sometimes granted visions of things far away. In the book, Frodo wearing the Ring sees all the West of Middle-earth crawling with Sauron's creatures. He becomes aware of the Eye of Sauron searching for him. The Eye is resisted by a Power from another source, and as the two battle, Frodo slips off the Ring and escapes. The breaking of the Fellowship that follows proceeds rather differently in the book; on the whole I prefer the movie's version. In the book, Aragorn is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. In frustration he leaps to the top of the hill and gazes from the seat, but he sees nothing useful. Incidentally, across the lake from Amon Hen is another hill, Amon Lhaw, the Hill of the Ear. It doesn't figure in the story, but one imagines there might be a similar seat on its top that grants useful hearing. Just another example of the intricacy of Tolkien's vision of Middle-earth.

Most people don't notice two successive lines from Gandalf: "This is a foe beyond any of you. Run!" and "Lead them on, Aragorn. The bridge is near." I have a theory that Gandalf knew he was going to have to fight the Balrog and might not survive the encounter, because he was the only one who could match the Balrog's power. A note about angels. In Tolkien's world, there was a supreme being, Eru Iluvitar, and two orders of angels, the Valar and the Maiar. Gandalf is a Maia, sent to Middle-Earth to battle Sauron with four other Maiar: Saruman the White, a third wizard named Radagast the Brown, who has no role in these movies (although he did in the books), and two "Blue wizards" who went off into the east and were never heard from again. Surprisingly Sauron was also once a Maia, but turned to the Dark Side, to use a term from another cinematic universe, as were Balrogs.
