It really depends on who and where you work at. I work for the BOP and have been doing so for the past ten years. Starting salary was $19.72 hr, and now I make $38.62 hr. I work at a low security medical center. The hardest part of my job is getting to work, its pretty much down hill after that. I work the graveyard shift (0000-0800). My shift involves sealing inmates mail, counts, and doing rounds. In between rounds, I'm in my office watching Amazon Prime and listening to inmate phone calls. Once my shift is over, I usually do overtime at the local hospital or I'll take an inmate to an outside medical appointment. On the weekends, I usually work overtime in the visiting room. I normally get about 40 to 72 hrs of overtime each period. I like the extra money so I can max out my TSP, Roth IRA, and HSA contributions. My goal is to be a TSP millionaire, when I retire. I can say I've been involved in probably a few, three or four use of force in my 10 years. Rarely do we have staff assaults at my institution. I always come across new COs who complain about our institution being slow. I always remind them that places like USP Beaumont and Pollock are hiring. In the end, you can really make as much money as want. Last year, I made over $180k. I made most of that just sitting around on my behind. Heck, we had a guy from food service make over $200k. The BOP along with my VA disability compensation has afforded me a great lifestyle for me and my family. Never have to worry about job security because a lot of these inmates leave and come back.

Thank you. I'm just a white shirt (observe only) until Sept 16th, then 8 weeks of training. VA diagnosed me as a psycopath, so shutting out all emotions and not taking the negativity back home to my wife and child is not an issue. I plan to work for 1 year, then my business and my wife's will be in full swing.
