Too bad the Brabham budget on this year was not up to the innovative solutions of this car. Probably the lowest gravity center car ever in the F1, even with a tilted engine to help in achieving it.
1986 was a forgettable year for Brabham, & as it turned out the beginning of the end. It's most successful driver Nelson Piquet (along with founder Jack Brabham), who delivered two world championships for them, had left to join Williams. Riccardo Patrese returned to the team after two rather disastrous seasons at Alfa Romeo. In his first time at Brabham he achieved two victories for them, at a time when Brabham was a front-running team. He was joined by Elio de Angelis, who's entire career was at Lotus where he got two victories apart from his first season which was at Shadow, where his best result for them was 4th. Tragically for the latter he was killed in a testing accident for the team between the fourth & fifth rounds at Paul Ricard which he would have survived but for near non-existent marshalling. He was replaced by Derek Warwick but was an outright disaster for him, scoring no points where Patrese fared little better achieving two. The Gordon Murray designed BT55 in itself was aerodynamically good, making it fast in straight-line speeds but the positioning of the BMW engine made the car getaway slowly & sluggish coming out of corners. It resulted in Murray quitting Brabham at the end of the season & moving to McLaren while Brabham's decline continued.

They ran the older BT-54 at that race as a back to back comparison against the BT-55. That's how desperate Brabham was getting to understand how they might improve the BT-55. Sad result for what looked an amazing concept in F1.

The aerodynamics of the BT55 worked. More downforce with no affect to drag making it good through the turns and very quick in a straight line. The problem was the slanted BMW engine. Severe oil surge made the BMW's already poor throttle response even worse. On top speed the car was as fast as anything, but on acceleration it was very sluggish. Murray always said that the lowline concept of the car would work much better with a smaller V6 engine like the TAG-Porsche or Honda. The 1988 McLaren MP4/4 (designed by Steve Nichols and not Murray as many believe, though Murray did help) with its Honda V6 proved that.
Considering recent coverage your comment is remarkably astute. The form of the brabham is unmistakably similar to mp4/4, both were the same new concept. Only it worked in the mp4/4. Would the mclaren have been good without such a low line? Nichols says he didn't seek a low line, it just happened. But gordon undeniably did seek it, pursuing honda for a lower angle v and developing the gearbox with weismann. The smaller clutch was irrelevant if they couldn't get the drive to the rear wheels. So if the mclaren was more an mp4/3 with a small clutch and a honda engine would it still have been good? Probably. But it arguably wouldn't have been so dominant without also having the low line aero package. We have to attribute the low line to murray, and every car that followed used it. And arguably that was the defining feature of the mp4/4, but you'd need a simulation to prove it.
Yeah, although it’s engine, the BMW M12/13 was by far one of the most powerful in F1 history, it had heaps of reliability issues because it was making over 1300hp with 5.0bar of boost in qualifying trim, Benetton’s B186 also used it. That’s where the Mclaren MP4/3’s inspiration came from, Mclaren soon realising it wasn’t as good as intended, they went back to the drawing board and came out with the MP4/4 in 1988. @@joshjackburns the bmw engine had reliability issues brought on by Murray canting it for a lower angle, to get the crank lower in the chassis. This cause oil starvation and blown engines.
@@ironmantooltime it wasn’t just the 18 degree angle of the engine however because 1300hp out of a 1.5l 4 cylinder is going to be incredibly unreliable
A smaller v6? The bmw was a 4 cilinder...
They ha a special engine from BMW to have a so low car. The motor had problem with the oil system.
