Nothing new for me, but yes there can be cat lovers that still believe those myths. Except maybe for those that believe in that nine lives. People who believe that, should never take a cat... too stupid!

My little home-office has a terrace. I have 2 cats that live with me - one is a daily guest, the other is my buddy. Anyhow, one day I hear hissing on the terrace and go to the always open door and look out and there is a foreign cat and my two cats guarding the office entrance. I fully open the door and step out, then SCREAM. I know, cats do not like noise blablabla - that is NOW what they saw. They saw the human coming and getting AGGRESSIVE to the intruder, BOTH cats go full on attack mode and the poor intruder turns around and RUNS - and one of my two (the more combative) RUNS behind him until he leads the garden. Never to be seen again. Next? Cuddle session with both, some nice foods. Nothing bad about me getting loud - they knew EXACTLY whose side I was on. Cats form colonies and humans are part of it and man, I never want to fight a cat. Their weapons are FRIGHTENING.

I've become very adept at cat body language. No matter what you do...watch the ears, tail, if fur gets puffed up suddenly, etc..... With ferals I've befriended, it was all about consistency.....the first one walked into my apartment all on her own when she was ready...I also never forced her to stay inside...eventually she opted to stay in during bad weather....with feral #2....took her 2 years until she trusted me enough to let me pet her......during those 2 years, she saw me doing the same things everyday, never looked at her while walking towards her...always slow, gentle movements when I knew she was around. All of this goes a long way towards trust.

Sometimes it just takes lots of patience because you never know what that poor fur baby went through that made her/him have trust issues. Thanks for sharing.

@@KittyKorner-om3ie I am convinced that any cat is reachable. Of course TnR increases the chance...Those who aren't fixed are much more difficult, but if you show any cat that consistency, it can go a long way...its as if they observe and test us to see if we can go the distance. Amazing, highly intelligent animals.

I was cleaning out my mother's apartment right after she died when I found a beautiful, velvety pearled black cat collar buried in her bedroom. I brought it home for my cat, Bushes. At the time my son, who was in the Marines, had just been deployed to Iraq. He had a heart shaped silver tag with the cat's name engraved on it and sent it to us. I attached it to the collar and it looked beautiful on her. One summer day she ran out galavanting around the neighborhood (she was an indoor/outdoor cat), but when she got home the collar was missing. I got very upset and she knew it, so she jumped on the bar, came to me then licked my nose. I knew it was her way of saying she was sorry. I miss my sweet kitty. She lived to be 17 years old.

I've always been able to have direct sustained eye contact with all my cats. I don't believe all cats see that as a threat. It's more like a sense of comfort for them. At least it is with my furry friends.

Even though I agree with most of the points here, when it comes to the first two points, I guess it depends on each cat. My cats love belly rubs and when touch their tails. One of my cats pulls my leg and start rubbing it against its face and eventually its belly. If I touch their bellies even when they are sitting or standing, they immediately lie down showing their bellies. My cats really don’t care about routine. They stay awake when I work from home. They sleep when I work from office. Also, they don’t eat until I get up. I have an auto feeder as they eat only dry food. They don’t eat wet food even if I give it to them. If I don’t wake up at my usual time, they come slowly and sniff my nose and go back to sleep or sit up and wait for me to get up. And only after I get up they expect me to walk with them to their room and stand next to them whilst they eat.

Always remember to respect boundaries. Dont believe that cats are these aloof, always wanting their own space kind of animals. While they do need their time to relax and do their own thing without any hassle, they will also come to you for attention quite often...moreso when they realize that you respect them. You will see cats run with their own timelines, 100% of the time. Never treat a cat the way you would a dog.....also keep a consistent schedule with no major fluctuations. They are very "time" oriented.
