I'm Dennis. I make mistakes running TTRPGs so YOU don't have to! Every session I run or play in, I learn something new. Developing new skills, fixing bad habits, trying out popular pieces of advice. Then, I share what I learn with you. Let's make our campaigns the best they can be!

This video is amazing. Quick anecdotes are so much better than preachy tutorials. This is just what I needed!
Lol whenever i heard the Lich my mind immediately goes to adventure time
That would be a GREAT setting for a SAGAS campaign
I recently had a big boss fight that ended a major arc of my campaign. Up until then, I experimented with a mechanic for introducing multiple phases to boss fights since my players are able to take them out very quickly with their use of control spells and solid damage. The last fight was one of the most enjoyable since it actually had 3 phases, all of which used everything they had learned up until then and actually threatened everyone (not just the tank). Overall, they are only level 10 and dealt over 600 points of damage amongst the 3 phases with 3 PCs and 2 NPCs (one was purely support and the other used to be a PC until our friend couldnt commit the time). Plus, it put an end to a hated NPC and provided that much needed catharsis. Luckily, I didn't need to fudge the HP to ensure the boss wasn't killed by and NPC
This was very helpful! Some of the lessons learnt were new to me, but some also reiterated important things I should keep in mind for a big boss fight. I really feel that first story, cause it’s the type of stuff that I’ve tried too as a dm, to disappointing effect. Not saying it’s impossible to pull off, but twists like that can feel unfair as a player.
Having each player prep a backup character and a oneshot might help encourage more dungeon masters, and the backup character could join the main campaign if their first one perish. That or some random ethereal jaunts, spellplague/whatever hook tying the characters together from the start.
A final battle against an ancient shadow dragon vs a multitude of allies from two years of play... They had pinned it down in a cave....and ROT GRUBS thrown by an NPC accidentally crit..... burrowed and killed it with little ceremony. Well, shit.
Sounds like it's Dracolich time!
@@Okayest__DM it's in the works, my friend
Love how you send out a questionnaire to your players & ask which of 3 of 6 types of players they are. I would pick: cruncher, role player, & munchkin.
Wow this is so cool! What a great way to introduce D&D to new players! 😃👍🏻
Countdown 🤔 Cool 😎
I left a like here just for the cat alone. Too bad I can't give another one for the content.
8:42 part 3 begins 😊
It's okay if something you say creates a paradox. The Fates can cut out and restitch the thread. And if the party's not careful, they'll be trapped in that thread as it curls up on the fire or gets eaten by the cat. 🐈
7:46 hellos 👋
Goodnight Hugo 🐈
Indeed. Without butts, your legs will fall off!
If all the mentors in the hero's journey went to kill a great evil but were defeated. The party, being their students, now have a great enemy to rail against after first gaining in power. The diversity of the mentors would also Account for that of the students.
Ooooo I LOVE that!
Dont kill npcs
Why not?
Grimdark Disney, cool 😎 _Disney Punk?_ _Dis-Topia?_
7:12 Hello back 😊
I was planning on using them as my patron of my warlock. I am pretty new to this so I am trying to learn about them. My character is a water genasi who makes a pact to save his crew and ship from an unprecidented storm.
Well, I'm currently painting a Nothic miniature I recently picked up for an upcoming campaign. I was going to just use it as a random monster hiding out in a dungeon library, but now I'm going to try and do something more interesting with it. The only issue I can see is that it only speaks Undercommon, and I don't know yet if my players would have a means to understand it. If they don't, I think I'd maybe give it Elvish (same alphabet) or something, as well.
The MMotM version lacks the compfort and the control weather from this version, which is a bummer, but does make them a little less OP in the nautical campaign I am putting on for my table, so I don't mind. Letting the party be exceptionally uncompfortable during a storm while this guy stands at the helm drenched in water, oar and eyes burning like beacons through the dark as if its any other day, entierly unbothered by the 60 foot waves is a great image in my mind.
49:42 The camera is moving à la BLM. This would be so cool when a monster or assassin is creeping up on the party, building the tension. Then... _"Player A, make a roll."_
An inspiration of mine and many others, I'm sure!
oooh, self-review, cool 😎 _Critical thought rules!!_
Hail, General VOD 😅
6:47 It begins 😊
Using a Nothic to reveal bits of the PC backstories to each other - fits perfectly into my upcoming session, thanks a bunch!
I don't get this use of guiding bolt; is this pure homebrew?
As part of the full party combo? pretty much. I kept the damage the same, and just applied it to another PC's attack roll instead of its own. I'd only ever do this as a combo in an epic boss fight, not in every battle.
@@Okayest__DM ah, I see!
UCB, University of California: Berkeley Funnily enough, my other half is on the UCB honours roll for cultural studies. I did physics in the UK. They're much smarter than me 🤓
Merch? I feel that a Hugo d20 mug is required. 🐈
06:51 Dennis has arrived 😊
i used 14 of them last week. it was thoroughly enjoyed by my table! the party kicked their asses but it was great!
"Into the (Doctor) Whoniverse!" I still wish I'd been able to run that one more... I may revisit.
