I like how Jack Nicholson did something similar to this with Anger Management. Dramatic actor’s somehow make for hilarious comedy acts.

It’s bullshit, but fine drama. No way the Colonel gets that worked up that easily for one. For two, it was still semantics and assumptions.

Is it just me or does this scene sorta make Col. Jessup out to be kind of a bad guy?

Having worked inside many military and civilian courtrooms, this movie is so unrealistic! However, it's a fantastic movie scene! In real courtrooms you rarely see lawyers pacing around in the well of the court during a trial. The well of the court is the open area of the courtroom between the defense, the judge, and the jury. The only exception to that rule is when the judge orders counsel to approach the bench, opening and closing arguments, or if an attorney is directly handling evidence to show it to a jury or a witness. So you rarely see attorneys questioning witnesses in the well of the court during a trial. There's also very little shouting in real courtrooms like you see in the movies. If you shout in a courtroom like in this scene, then I can nearly guarantee that most judges will throw your butt in jail for committing contempt of court! Shouting at someone is normally considered very disrespectful to the behavior and decorum that is expected inside a courtroom.

Great movie from back when movies were great (unlike today's movies). Great acting by Cruise,Bacon,Nicholson,Moore, etc etc etc.

I have neither the time or the inclination to explain myself to a man that rises and sleeps beneath the blanket of the very freedom that i provide and then questions the manner in which i provide it. Jack Nicholson is an intense actor reciting a brilliantly written script ✌️😎

As a guy who has been exclusively a criminal defense lawyer for 34 years, I see many parts of this scene that would never happen in real life. But, the scene is so good that it doesn’t bother me at all. Same with my colleagues: prosecutors and defense lawyers as well.

3:37- "Lt. Kendrick ordered the code red didn't he, because that's what you told Lt. Kendrick to do! And when it went bad, you cut these guys loose!! You had Markinson sign the phony transfer order!! you doctored the logbook,!! you coerced the doctor!- now I'm asking you, Col Jessup!! Did you order the Code Red?" Lt. Kaffee, (Tom Cruise)...... I can see why the judge informed him he don't have to answer, because if he admitted to any of Kaffee accusations (1. Ordering Kendrick to do the Code Red 2. Having Markinson sign the transfer order 3. Doctoring the logbook, 4. Coercing the Doctor- so when he finally admitted to doing one of these which was the one, he needed to get him on- the judge in good conscious could not hold Kaffee in contempt of accusing an officer- because the officer despite the judge's advice, decided to answer- "Pride comes before a fall."

While "You can't handle the truth" will always be the big line, What Nicholson says right after is some real truth, even ugly. "You want me on that wall, you need me on that wall".... "Code, Honor, Duty".... this *is* what we ask of those who serve and yes, at times we don't want to know how they defend that wall. But, we need to know, because it is not just that we are defended, that we do so without losing our humanity. This was the message of this movie. "I hate them because they beat up a weaker kid". " love them because they stand on that wall". Which matters first defines who we are.
