it's moments like these which made Jon Pertwee my favorite Doctor(that and Jo Grant, and her beautiful scream! Hello 😍) Also, Jon Pertwee was some kind of Judo expert irl, and appeared in some martial arts action films of that period. He was the perfect blend of sweet, snarky, bitter, and kind-with a touch of good humor, when it came to his portrayal of the 3rd Doctor. but most of all...He wasn't even acting, he was just being himself!

The stories themselves were more serious, not so much Pertwee himself, particularly in the first few seasons. Season 7 in particular had an invasion, the decimation of an entire Earth, genocide, a government conspiracy, and…deadly astronauts and volcano people. Has to be a bit camp someplace I guess.

I started watching in 1971, circa "Mind Of Evil." The Keller Machine was really creepy! The first four Doctors were legendary, with the show peaking in the 70's, with viewing figures New Who can only dream of! Classic Who was so much better than New Who. Because they had a shoestring budget, they had to be creative and imaginative, and come up with great stories. New Who is style over substance. Take away the CGI, the deafening music, and the silly sex-xhange Doctor, and what have you got? ... A boring forgettable load of crap!

The third doctor was heavily influenced by spy films like james bond. Jon Pertwee was an actual spy during world war 2. And one of the three people considered to be the inspiration for james bond. That is *so fucking cool*

To be more accurate, Pertwee went from convoy duties, narrowly missing HMS Hood being blown the day he disembarked, being bombed while on further training, all the way INTO Naval Intelligence mid and post war. According to him, after informing an actor on the sly what he was doing, he replied to the question 'What kind of spy are you?' with: "A TERRIBLE one!" 😅

I met and bodyguard Jon at a convention in Huntington, WV, at the Marshall University Campus Dr. Who tour. I was dressed as a UNIT soldier and the cons showrunner asked me to keep an eye on him and do crowd control. Jon asked me if I had saved in the army and when I told him I was a former Navy man we hit it off, That was when he told me about his time on the Hood and how he was medically transferred off after he broke his leg just before her fateful encounter with the Bismark, and how he lost many a friend that day I could tell after all that time and this was if memory serves 1988 or 89 that the pain was still there. I found out Jon smoked but his wife would get on him about it so we snuck off and burnt a couple of fags and just talked, after that, I considered him a friend and when I read of his passing I cried for a bit Jon will always be my favorite Doctor.
