Gem Mint Collectables

Gem Mint Collectables

I have a passion for collectibles. There are so many collectibles that have been tucked away for decades and I enjoy releasing them back out into the wild. We have a few businesses and one is an estate sale company. My wife does a great job setting them up and it's fun doing the sales. I see first hand where individuals passionately collect items and family members have no interest whatsoever when they pass away. But it helps release items back out into the wild where someone else can appreciate them. One of our other businesses involves buying and selling pokemon and sports cards. I enjoy buying card collections and grading them with PSA. I get enjoyment out of the grading process and it's less complicated selling the cards when they are graded versus raw. Then of course I branch off every once in a while and purchase a random storage unit or unique collection that forces me to learn new things. You only live once so I try to keep myself on my toes and have fun.

    The video starts with mostly trains from 1970 to about the year 2000. Stuff made from 1970-1985 tends to be valued on the cheap side (because they were produced on the cheap, so they tend to not be very desirable to collectors). Stuff made from 1986 forward has better value. Note: Lionel will print a date (year) on most of their train cars. It is usually the year that the car went into production. At about the 1:20 mark, you start mostly on what are called Post War trains (1946-1969). The remainder of the trains on top of the tables are mostly Post War too. Postwar trains can be valuable if in pristine condition because so few are. Postwar trains were subject to A LOT of variants, some of which can be valuable due to scarcity. Nothing I saw there stood out to me as a holy grail, but then again it was a general camera sweep from a distance, so that is not to say that there isn’t one.

    Don't ever send vintage cards to PSA. They are the least consistent, take the most time, have horrible slabs, non-existent customer service, and can't tell altered cards from original. AVOID!

    I just collect cards vintage and new. I don't worry about grading. My belief is if you get lucky at a yard or estate sale or flea market or grandparents inheritance and you find a perfect looking vintage card like a mantle or other hof that might be near mint to gem mint then get it graded only if you sell on the big auctions and make big Megabucks and not eBay. On eBay it's only the money the average Joe has in his pocket he can afford to pay at a discount for the card.

    I've been collecting since the early 70's and, although there are some nice PC cards there, they look like they got the grade they deserved. The 79 Ozzie seems to always be OC. I have 4 of them from when I collected and all the centering seems to be like yours. I wouldn't bother to send them in. The Mantle card is nice and definitely a 1 with all the surface damage. The 68 Topps Mantle Playing Card is really OC but still a great card. Some of them are just nice to have in slabs for your personal collection but emotions can't get you better grades.

    From everything I have seen, PSA destroys vintage cards, almost like they have a grudge against them. A lot of your cards look better than their grade at least on the eye appeal test.

  • @Collectwhatyoulike

    Also for future reference, any card that is a PSA 4 that looks Near-Mint to Mint particularly with sharp corners usually means a crease or surface wrinkle somewhere.

    The Staubach doesnt look like a miscut at first glance but per their definition, it does look like the back has the border of another card on the very right edge. Otherwise, I still dont see why it wasn't graded. Minimum Size Requirement means the card doesn't physically fall within the specifications they are supposed to be cut at which is the standard 2 1/2 x 3 1/2. They are two entirely different qualifiers.

  • @cklimowicz
    @cklimowicz23 күн бұрын

    That is a "diamond cut". PSA generally does not slab those.

  • @Collectwhatyoulike
    @Collectwhatyoulike22 күн бұрын

    @@cklimowicz Yeah, I missed the diamond cut. I actually just received two 75's that weren't slabbed that had a miscut label.I'll have to take a closer look.
