How does DAW automation recording and editing work in Ableton live?

Like any plugin, select configure in AL, then turn an encoder and it gets the parameter name to be automated. The controller is not involved in the automation editing. The automation is recorded when turning the encoders or moving the parameters via the mouse or the touchscreen.

Can you have instruments and effects on the same instance? Can you still get the all of the separate automation lanes to edit in ableton for each device and each parementer even though your using the wrapper? Thanks

Instruments have their own host. However, both appear on the plugin panel and it's possible to switch from an instrument to an effect and vice versa. Automation is reported to the DAW per plugin as name of plugin - parameter name, ie Diva - Attack. Additionally, in Ableton, you can control native devices and plugins without the host plugin, via the Ableton Control surface. Upon selecting a device will sync the controller with the parameters

I think have a same question. Do you means have a page that has custom macros from any instruments or effects mapping to each knob? This will be awesome. I use TouchOSC for this kind of work.

@@dkmu6 Yes, there are mapping presets for more than one thousand popular plugins. It is also very easy to link parameters and create a preset that loads the plugin and links to controller all at once. See the video: How to map your plugin on the MP Controller

Very interesting. One question though. I build my own synths in Bitwig Studio’s The Grid. That is however a full DAW and not an individual VST. I assume everything still works as long as I configure the right MIDI controllers but: can I also get a shot of The Grid on the screen to control directly with the touch functions?

This looks amazing! I hope you someday make a version with light dials around each push encoder (Like Midi Fighter Twister) and also a small text display below each encoder. That way all relevant info could be seen on the physical controls and the main display could always be dedicated to the zoomed in plugin. Maybe one oversized knob bottom center ;)

A wooden case and synth style knobs would make it look even more desirable. Can you guys make some extensive video on this unit? Showing how the workflow looks like in real-time, switching between plugins and recording live while changing the parameters and so on. Thinking about buying one.
