  In my opinion, Basenjis never lost the ability to bark. I think they bever barked. They are one of the dog breeds that are most wolflike, and wolves don't bark, except as puppies. But like Basenjis, adult wolves howl, whine, and make other sounds, except for barking. Crate training is recommended for young dogs to keep them from getting into mischief when the owner isnt home. In my experience with my own Basenjis, after they are about two years old they can be left alone in many cases if they have been trained. Positive reinforcement is the only training that works with these intelligent, independent animals. And the rewards are many! It's not the Basenjis that are unsuitable, it's badly informed owners who aren't suitable. Not everyone can appreciate their many wonderful traits. If that's you, get a golden retriever or a poodle.

  basenjis CAN bark, they just don’t very often (the few times I heard it were when my basenjis were startled). And they don’t retreat bark at all.

  I had my 15 1/2 year old Shiba Inu pass away in January which he was an awesome incredible Dog. As much as I love Shiba’s with their look the shedding is horrendous, twice a year. I know Basenji’s are a lot like Shiba’s so when I’m ready to take on another Dog companion this is a breed I will be looking at…

  I adopted my basenji from a rescue dog kennel. She was very young and had been removed from a family by child welfare for chewing a baby's fingers. I had no idea what I was in for. She was very stubborn, however extremely intelligent. I became a falconer at 12 when I found an injured red-tailed hawk in the road and later, I adopted a wolf malamute hybrid. If you want to know what an animal needs, they will let you know, if you are patient enough to learn. Once, while walking my basenji, we came upon a lost basenji stray. Both dogs took to each other as if they were old friends. My basenji had never liked other dog breeds. I managed to capture the dog and took him to my vet to check for a chip. We contacted the owner and she said she did not want him back, so I had two wonderful basenjis.

  Great overview of the basenji characteristics that some folks might not be ready for. I live alone with my basenji, so he gets plenty of undivided attention, but I also leave him home while I'm at work--thus far, he seems very comfortable, even on the rare occasion when I leave him alone for 8-9 hours.

  I've had a female for 14 years and then a male for 12 years. The breed has changed and adapted very much through generations, but still think highest of themselves, they are not easily trained but easily bought with treats, are very cuddly and crave warmth from whomever as long as they get what they are after. Fun and mischievous, if they are understimulated. Soft, short and clean fur and no dog smell at all. Often tends to bond more with one human but cuddles with everyone. Is NOT a dog that you want to on the loose outside fenceless, and is often very dominant against new dogs of same sex if not extremely well socially trained at a young age. Love this breed, very unique. ❤❤❤
