    Nice video, Kent. I was thinking about taking a bike up Elbert, but parking the bike somewhere along the way up and retrieving it on the way down. Can you recommend a good spot to ditch the bike? I assume near where the tree line ends?

  • @WhereKentWent
    @WhereKentWent29 күн бұрын

    Sounds like fun! If you’re not taking the bike all the way, you’ll probably want to ditch it somewhere below tree line. After tree line is where the trail starts to get more technical. Plus then you could hide it in the trees somewhere.

    Fyi, I've been enjoying also inspired watching some of your older peak ascents. It's fun to watch you and your brother on these trips. Reminding of my youthful vigor 30+ years ago heading out with friends on peaks and long hikes. I got hit in AB, Canada with Lyme Disease 10 years ago. Lots of adult ticks in the Cdn Rockies: np, pull them off after a check. No one ever told me about the tiny poppyseed sized nymphs you don't see; nor classic really common onset symptoms. I got the 2 to 6 weeks of serious flu NO chest problems PLUS drenching night time sweats. Those go away and then serious sh!t starts. Wasn't treated for a year. Thus ended life as I knew it. But I'm inspired by this vid. Why not with a friend take a flight and then heli to a high remote peak and bivi a couple nights? Might never do it, but it's possible and attainable. PS You might have been lucky so far with winds idk. In a previous decade, a friend & I hiked Windy Peaks a few hours from here and could lean into the wind at an angle for support and not fall down. Car in the lot was shaking too. Fun, once. PSS You are very good at video production. Best.

    hi great video i have been wanting to climb this peak for a bit now and i was wondering if you could answer some of my questions. 1) are ice axes and crampons necessary? i am thinking of climbing this mid to late summer, do you think spikes and poles will work? what is the necessary gear for this trip? 2) how is the hike up huckle Huckleberry Creek to princess lake? you said it was bad but how bad? 3) i am a hard rock climber but i have never gone mountaineering, is there any tips you would give me? 4) when did you leave princess lake to summit? 5) i am thinking of doing this solo, any tips for me? please and thank you this is really useful

  • @WhereKentWent
    @WhereKentWent2 ай бұрын

    We didn’t bring crampons but were very happy to have our ice axes on the two snow bridges. The hike to princess lake is very overgrown and full of deadfall. That’s what makes it so difficult. You can’t leave for the summit too early, we left princess lake later than we should have, I think around 8AM. The route we took is very slow because almost all of it is over boulders. I wouldn’t recommend doing it solo because of how rugged the terrain is. Also you should look at the FTD plateau route option if you haven’t already.

    I have heard tell of folks with property adjoining abandoned RR ROWs that view the ROW as their property (maybe it did revert, I am not a lawyer), so the care you exhibited in those areas with "active" properties near the rail seems like a good idea to me.

    For those of you who enjoy climbing 100 foot towers check out the Mountain Lookout Tower ( 45.2156914, -88.4651287 ) this is (as far as I am aware) the only public climbable fire tower in Wisconsin. Basically that just means it has a tiny stairway vs a extremely tall ladder, plus there's a floor in the tower and obviously you are allowed to climb it. P. S. In the video you mentioned it's possibly a fire lookout tower, that is exactly what it is. These use to be the norm for a long time until satellite imagery and lightning strike detection systems improved to a level where a poor firefighter no longer has to lug 80+ lbs of gear up a hundred foot tower to sit watching for lightning strikes or fire.
