I'm no fencer nor expert but raised with Tyrone Power, Errol Flynn, Stewart Granger, Douglas Fairbanks Jr and Basil Rathbone and various samourais swinging steel - and yes! even Danny Kaye! So, Jedis aside, i hate people flying, turning and flipping around à la Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or slow motion, hair in the wind, Instagram style fencing. What not to like in a common, boring live-or-die confrontation between the good guy and the bad guy? Actually i like "By the sword", "The duelists" and "Die another Day" duels because they are practical fights as a real swashbuckler has to have - even if Bond and his opponent look kids waving sticks (they both wouldn't stand a chance againt Depardieu/Ferrer in Cirano de Bergerac) I know, i'm a barbarian who cannot distinguish a sabre (if not a LIGHTsabre) from a fioretto or a rapier but that's the fencing i like in movies.

only in sabre, though the fencing sabre isnt actually a sabre, its actually modelled after thrusting swords with sabre hilts of the 20th century. but olympic sabreuers pretend it is. they dont have any cutting mechnics in fencing either, its all just tippy taps that wouldnt even cut your clothes. (granted, they occasionally do actually hit hard, but even so they dont care about aligning the edge or anything, even the spine and flat give you points.)
