She wasn't just an opera diva. She was a magnificent actress who brought soul to her characters and broke them out of their classical monotony. For this reason, and for bringing forgotten operatic classics to life, she was revolutionary. When Callas was on stage, she was unmistakable and incomparable.

Both are superb sopranos. I adored Tebaldi in Madame Butterfly. See her magnificent acting and Japanese gestures in that white kimono , singing Un Bel Di. It is on You Tube. She looks like a porcelain Japanese doll and sings like an angel with powerful emotion. In the above Tosca comparison, Callas wins.

Renata is not performing well at 1:53-1:57. Leontyne Price does that nicely. I'm listening to Tebaldi's Si, Mi Chiamano Mimi and I guess if I want to hear A DECENT pianissimo, I better put on Caballe.

Don't forget that we're listening to their voices on youtube. In my opinion, Tebaldi's voice sounded spectacular in a theatre while Callas voice was perfect for recordings... That's the difference and that's why I wouldn't want to hear Callas sing live as I wish I could hear Renata's voice live, which must have been something really special. I heard a story (Bergonzi) about Tebaldi being a superstar while she was still studying in the Conservatory in Parma, way before her debut... when she had her singing lesson all the other students gathered outside the door to hear Tebaldi sing. Maria, on the other hand, is almost like a pop singer to me, her voice can speak to anyone and everywhere. So, if you ask me who do I prefer in this performance of Tosca, we're on youtube so I'd say Callas, but I wish I could hear Renata sing this live.

in my humble opinion, Callas owns this but reading through the comments I decided to listen to Renata Tibaldi's studio recording from 1950. while it is marvelous in its technical quality, it feels melodramatic to a fault. the extension of phrasing makes it feel too much of a spectacle if that makes sense, and it strips it of the emotion and grief. you feel the pain in Callas' voice, the destruction and resolve, the anguish and anger. to me it will always be Callas and then everyone else. the only other that I've come to enjoy is from the incomparable Leontyne Price.

A wonderful vocal artist that should have gone further in a career of singing. Sadly Hollywood and others drained him. In all respect though a life on the Operatic stage would not have given him anywhere near the millions of Dollars that the film industry gave him. He was an unhappy soul with all his wealth. Having said that it is good that his voice can still be heard on recordings. Brilliant voice.
