    I've had this idea ever since switching to wood pellets. I've been sifting by hand in a large screen bottomed box and it works well but knew a rotating cylinder would be much faster. Maybe someday.

    As A lighting engineer in training, If I could get it to work with a traditional lighting desk this has limitless posibilities. I feel like this would be perfect for photography or some Eyecandy effects at an event

  • @SuperValidDesigns
    @SuperValidDesigns4 күн бұрын

    Totally, the lighting desk thing is something I'm not too sure on as I dont have too much experience with that kind of hardware, but this system should be easy to incorporate with any desks that can use artnet. Other than that, the rig can be built in an analogue configuration that only uses 24 DMX channels. The tubes will be limited to one colour at a time (as opposed to individual pixels within each tube) but I used an analogue system for years prior to this V2 rig and it worked amazingly

  • @noahsreview1357
    @noahsreview13572 күн бұрын

    @@SuperValidDesigns The analogue should be fairly simple to get working, most desks support artnet. My main concern would be getting the individually adressable strips working, fixtures like LED Battons work fairly well which in simple terms have the desk see each LED as seperate fixtures under the main fixture, I might be able to get something like that working with the strips, but it is hard to tell without having the hardware on hand.

    Can the decoder work with any type of light ? for instance a strobe? really neat what you designed. Always wanted to try making something to the same effect as you. Years ago wanted to hold a festival, plus wanted to tour manage. Unsure if you also took wood shop or whatever it was called but the lamp project was really neat compared to the wood only projects. Years ago made a custom poker table, which I included lighting but given the time constraint...wasn't exactly able to do what I wanted with the lighting.

  • @SuperValidDesigns
    @SuperValidDesigns4 күн бұрын

    I can definitely flash these lights enough to give a decent strobe effect but I think if you wanted a true strobe light, it would be very easy to just add an off the shelf strobe light into the dmx chain, if that answers your question

    Hey Jeff, I've been intrigued by your lighting rig since the first video. Great demonstration video and killer tune too. Happy to see version 2 pixel mapped. I would've liked the focus of the demo more on the fixtures though as I couldn't visually tell if your new diffusion method (sanding) appeared smoother than the old method (parchment paper) due to everything around you being softened. I was wondering if PoE could be used instead of aviation cable. Thanks for doing what you do, us tinkerers appreciate it!

  • @SuperValidDesigns
    @SuperValidDesigns4 күн бұрын

    Thanks so much for the kind words! I think I showed the sanded tubes a little bit clearer on the V2 Rig Rundown video that I posted back in February. The sanding method certainly does not diffuse the light as well as the parchment paper did, but with these new COB style leds, that are almost seamless without any diffusion, sanding does the trick just fine! The issue with PoE is the cable gauge, if I am correct, the gauge is usually pretty light and because the cables need to transfer enough current to operate the actual LEDs, the gauge needs to be thick enough (22awg in this case) to avoid too much voltage drop

    Thanks you so much for this vidéo. There is a thing I can't undestand : Do you use the ethernet port of the octa brainboard ? In fact I would like to understand how you connect the octa system to touch designer. I watched the vidéos of the octa system but didnt find an explication of how informations come into the system. Does the octasystem has a predefined number of channels like your previous DMX decoder ? How the octa system knows you send data for 17 pixels, is there a software ? Why dont you connect the octa system with artnet, so maybe you could have multiple universes inside each port (does it's possible ?) Thanks you again !

  • @SuperValidDesigns
    @SuperValidDesigns4 күн бұрын

    Thanks for the great questions! I'll try and address all of them here: The ethernet port is usable but I actually just used wifi in my video as it was already set up for that. I just had to go inside the WLED software which is on the actual DigOcta board to turn on Artnet Mode which lets Touch Designer Control it. WLED is also the software that lets you tell the controller how many pixels are in each fixture and what channel they are on. The dig octa can handle 2,500 pixels with up to 600 on any given channel i believe so it can certainly handle multiple universes at once. I hope that answered everything but let me know if you have more questions!

    Really interested in this design! A question about programming in v2. I might have missed it in the video. Does V2 allow a DMX feed from an external console? Say I wanted to incorporate these in a much larger lighting set up. Also how difficult would it be to re-address them? Say I wanted to expand from 8 to 24, 36, plus? Not concerned about them expanding different universes, as it seems you made sure to fit 8 in a universe. Would really love to see these as features if at all possible. Thanks for the video and demo. Edit: another question in regards to the “neon light tubing” whats the max length supported per tube? Would really love to be able to craft custom client designs with this set up. Does the neon light support pixel mapping also?

  • @SuperValidDesigns
    @SuperValidDesigns13 күн бұрын

    Great questions all around. I am not too sure what the best way to incorporate this specific rig into an existing console via DMX would be. Since this rig uses Pixels, the amount of channels required would be insane, well beyond a single universe of DMX so we are using artnet to control these currently. I dont come from a background of using DMX boards so, while I think there is probably a way to do it, I havent been able to figure out how yet. My version 1 rig, however, which used analogue LED strips was completely dmx controllable and only took up 24 channels and this new rig can be easily adapted to use the same analogue strips For the neon tube lighting, since we are using 24v, you can go pretty darn long with them. We were messing around with one fixture that was a 6 foot diameter circle, and the system was able to light the entire strip without any power injection and with no noticeable voltage drop throughout so you could get away with a fixture of almost 20 feet in length (the strips come in 16 foot lengths and we can light up the whole thing from one end). Having 8 of these long fixtures would likely require a heftier power supply though. The neon strips are indeed addressable and support pixel mapping
