    a modular system like this that lets you choose a sensor size, with interchangeable backs, good controls and with a minimalist body is the direction cameras should go imo...I'd love something like this for photo and videography for documenting travels on a bicycle.

    Hello Mister. I love your videos. Because of you Im looking for a thermal typewriter. I live in japan but found hard to find any Typestar. I found some other brands like Brother PICOWORD and CASIO Word Processor HW-500. But i was unable to find out if they are thermal printers. DO you know these one or have any suggestions mister, I would be really thankful.

    Hi Sam, This is a good machine in my opinion! It works well, and it's affordable. Paid $40 for mine.

    What do you consider the smallest reel to reel?

  • @ScottGrammer
    @ScottGrammer14 күн бұрын

    @@TypewriterChicago I had thought it might be smaller, but the Aiwa TP-60 (a decidedly NOT hi-fi machine) is about 5-13/16 x 3-7/8 x 2-1/8 inches (147 x 97 x 54 mm). On checking the dimensions of the Nagra, it is only about half the volume of the Aiwa. Its length and width are almost exactly the same as the Aiwa, and it's only half as thick. Absolutely amazing. Of course, the Aiwa does use 1/4 inch tape, which the Nagra does not, but the Nagra is a high-quality machine, while the Aiwa is basically a toy.

    @ScottGrammer I actually picked one of these up. Hasn't shipped yet, needs serious repair, but I'll do an in depth comparison on both! The Aiwa is rim drive sadly :(

    I thought the video was great. I was recording a piece to camera last year down by the seafront. I was standing on a small pier, and a lady was at the end of her driveway. I thought 'she'll leave in a minute' but actually her neighbour turned up, and they started gossiping. I pushed through in the end but super awkward. That tape machine looks great. I've been think of getting what you call an electronic typewriter. If they can just run off D Cells means they will be handy to bring to coffee shops

    Wonderfully fun video! I’m glad you are writing regularly with your Typestar. Thermals are great for typing in the woods, while being creeped out wondering if the guy behind you is an ax murderer! I love the aesthetic of the Nagra with its spinning reels. The lav mic seems to have a cardioid pickup pattern that favors the front of the mic. Maybe put it on a stick, Bob Barker style?

  • @TypewriterChicago
    @TypewriterChicago26 күн бұрын

    I've been loving the quiet convenience! And yeah, Nagras are so wonderful. I had hoped the mic would work hands free, but I guess it'll work okay just set down somewhere.

    The really weird thing with thermal typewriters is that they're basically a de-engineering of contemporary computer printers, opting to stick a highly simplified word processor directly into the body so the hardware could be used at a lower speed, with fewer features, by people or companies who were not able to adapt to computer typesetting. Many of them actually have parallel "printer" ports that allow them to be used interchangeably as a printer or typewriter.

    I’ve been at this for a while on a futura 800, and no matter what I do or how I place the bearings, they just plop right out, even with the stopper screws in. I’ve even tried a few different stopper screws and nuthin. I am at a loss. I’ve done this before on older machines, but for some reason unbeknownst to me the Futura is being a jerk.

    It seemed to sound brighter with it clipped facing your chest. BTW, I recently used one of those rechargeable Lithium Ion AA batteries in a condenser mic, and got some bad noise in the audio, as if there’s some active circuitry in the battery, so for now I’ll be using alkaline disposables. Looking forward to the Canon Typestar 5 video!

    Man, even into the 70s we were still making little pieces of art in product design. By the 90s that was all gone....There is a charm to the fake wood trim around TVs and on clock radios, but everything kind of went brutalist minimal utilitarian, then lame grey smooth plastic after that. Nice find, man! IDK how up my ally your channel would be, but I found this video cool. Keep on keeping on, man! I know plenty of people that would be into this stuff, so keep em comin!

    Nice to see you live on KZread! Nothing wrong with your Nagra mike. Be carefull with the red printed-on text of the recorder. Its not anodised on, but screenprinted. (early type)

  • @TypewriterChicago
    @TypewriterChicagoАй бұрын

    Yeah I worry about the screen printing, it does have lacquer over top. The mic doesn't sound great on body, but maybe I just need to drop it lower somehow.

    The only advantage is, it can offer more running time, than a cassette, but the format is outside any standard. Another company tried a wannabe reel recorder with ⅛" tape and it goes through a cassette mechanism.

  • @TypewriterChicago
    @TypewriterChicagoАй бұрын

    This was made before the development and acceptance of compact cassettes. The follow up machine was the Nagra JBR which had one of the first cassette mechanisms on the market. The SN also offered a much longer record time, and a higher audio quality than cassettes, in an often more rugged and compact package. It also includes crystal sync, and 50v phantom power, with automatic level controls, also not available with cassette at the time.

    Not only functional., but an absolute work of art. I knew my destiny was writing. On my 8th birthday, I asked for a typewriter. No, I did not get the Selectric, but the infamous "Tom Thumb" toy typewriter. After impressing my folks with my typing and writing skills, I was given an old Underwood machine a few months later.

    Hi, may I ask you, is this machine lighter to type on than others? I am looking for a super light keystroke, almost the same as on an electrical keyboard.

  • @TypewriterChicago
    @TypewriterChicagoАй бұрын

    It is pretty light, but I think I'd recommend the Royal FP, or the Olympia SG3 as the best. The Olympia SM3 and later are probably the lightest keystroke manual typewriters out there. I will say though, that any manual machine is going to have a significantly larger key travel than an electric.
