Finally! This is the 1st source I've come across to recognize the "circular well" and "Spoletta" leitmotivs and point out how the 2nd, 3rd and 5th of those 5 chords are the Scarpia motive chords; and like the Scarpia motive: they consist of 5 Major triads who's roots descend in whole tones in the bass, and the rest in opposite motion; ascending. But why is it called "circular well"? weren't most garden wells circular? I'd call it "the well" or "Hiding place" motive, and the other one ""mock" execution". I used to call them "Secrets" motives; as Angelotti's hiding place is a secret, and Spoletta's motive is only heard when planning the "mock" execution that is actually and secretly real, and is only heard again at the end. They are both secrets either from or by Scarpia and both use the same Major triads with two more, separated by descending whole tones playing the root of those chords in the bass clef and all other notes in the treble clef in opposite motion; ascending in different inversions (even if they're technically in root position since the lowest line in the bass clef is always playing the root of each chord). You have no idea how vindicating it feels to have known this for 45 years to finally discover someone actually document these leitmotivs, and I thank you very much for finally making a comprehensive analysis of Tosca's Leitmotivs, especially identifying the "circular well" and "Spoletta" ("mock" execution) leitmotivs. BTW I remember seeing you conduct Tosca in 1978 "Live at the Met" (3 hours later in Vancouver) w Shriley Verrett, Cornel McNiel and Pavarotti, directed by Tito Gobbi. When I saw this production, it was and still is my favorite night of theatre I've ever had. Mozart has always been my favorite since I was basically a toddler, but funnily enough, the first Marriage of Figaro performance I ever saw was the stage play, which the author Beaumarchais originally hoped to be an opera. It was an incredible night of an audience of college students laughing hysterically at the amazing screwball comedy staged to bring out the wonderful characters and wild shenanigans. It's a play that should be in the regular rotation of greatest comedy works. Knowing how Mozart was obsessed with the combination of music and text and acting working together for a complete entertainment experience, I was disappointed to see performances of the opera after that with great singers minus all of the sharp comic timing and fun of the story. And then I went to LA Opera for this performance. For the first time ever, I was in a theater of people completely focused on the stage. No futzing with phones, no loud shifting in seats, no distractions or annoyances. Everyone was hooked. Everyone was belly laughing and swooning and cheering. I heard completely sincere "oohs" and "aahs" and then other audience members laughing at how genuine they were. My face hurt from smiling for three hours, and I'm sure I wasn't alone. During intermissions, people were still laughing and smiling and talking about how this is their favorite opera, and other newcomers to opera were exclaiming how they hadn't realized how fun opera can be. Guanqun Yu is a wonder, and she brought out all of the humanity of her character. The sparkling humanity of all of the female characters in this work was never so obvious. There isn't enough love for Marcellina! Oh and I can't forget to mention how loveable Pretty Yende was. So sweet and smart and energetic. But my biggest surprise was the Cherubino performance. To see an excellent singer perfectly perform the mannerisms of a goofy teenaged boy in her performance brought so much to the work as a whole. All around, the performers brought out something so special in Mozart's music - how he so perfectly figured out how to convey character in music and create perfect comedic timing musically. If I could see a complete film of this performance, I would be so happy. Or even just one complete scene.

We saw her in Tosca, this week in Vienna. Divine voice, amazing technique! But the lack of artistic stage behavior unfortunately did not allow a real experience.
