I played CarVup alot when I was a child. If memory serves me right, press 'M' to play music. Also, if you press up and jump, you do a high jump, down and jump for low jump and left or right with jump to do a long jump!. If you take too long to complete a level, Turbo comes after you! If you leave one bit untouched, E X T R or A comes down. If you do this over 5 levels and collect them all, you gain an extra life!

A really interesting video.👍 I'd say the second port of Double Dragon is easily the best, despite the slightly washed out colours. The first version was so slow... it felt like walking through a river of molasses.😮 It's a shame they couldn't simply improve the colour scheme in the first version of Paperboy, as it's definitely the better version in many ways. The second version is very lacking when it comes to content but at least the graphics show off the Amstrad hardware.

regarding converting arcade games to other systems, there are so many reasons. From a coding perspective it's really a fun challenge to try and do something better than it has been done before. It's a way to push the limits of the machine with a series of clear goals, and something that others can relate to because they are already familiar with the game in question. I often compare it to songs that you love - why bother learning to play them on the piano or guitar when you can listen to the originals? because it gives you a deeper understanding of the mechanics. I think nostalgia plays a part too, because a lot of people play vintage games through the eyes of their teenage selves, and so when they play these conversions they imagine how they would have felt seeing it at the time. Sometimes it also rights the wrongs of the past, when you bought an arcade conversion and it was terrible, and so people often say 'finally after all these years we have a good version on our favourite machine'.

31:35 I can really underscore this conversation. Moving to Japan has been great in so many ways for me, I've made some friends, my Japanese has advanced a lot, but I can't deny it can be a very lonely life here. Right now I'm persisting because I know in another year or so my Japanese will be good enough to be extremely useful for work. I have zero friends in the town I live in, they're all just over an hour away in another city where I skate. As a real people person, it's a struggle. Can a robot/AI etc. replace human empathy, I am very skeptical. But I'm someone who likes to be around people and I'm a hugger when it comes to saying bye to friends, and I live in a country where that's a social no-no.

"the game that makes people the maddest" - you got that right. This conversion is an absolute travesty. I'm well aware this comparison has been done to death but, to see what the Amiga can actually do when it comes to arcade racing, you have to look at a game like Lotus Turbo 2, or even Jaguar XJ220 (although this one honestly doesn't hold up nearly as well as Lotus). It's worth remembering the Amiga got a really good Super Hang On conversion as well. Clearly the A500 was never going to be able to replicate the incredibly colourful super-scalar graphics of the arcade original OutRun, but what games like Lotus and Hang On do is show that it could have replicated the feel, the smooth sense of speed, the playability. 30-odd years later and I still get triggered every time I see this crappy version of OutRun. Oh, and they even effed up the rhythm in Magical Sound Shower and made it sound absolutely terrible. Whoever worked on this conversion, there aren't enough feet in the world to kick them in the balls with. By the way, I've never run across this channel before, but I like you two and the format of this video. I thought I couldn't be entertained by another video about the Amiga's terrible OutRun conversion, but I was wrong, and I wonder if I'll ever get tired of people justifiably wailing on it.

This is probably the most infamous amongst all the ST ports that plagued the Amiga in the early[87-89] days of the machine. The Amiga version of Out Run could, without doubt, have had brighter colours, more details, and much smoother gameplay. No one would have expected a perfect port, but a skilled developer could have at least delivered something reasonably authentic. Just look at the excellent PC Engine/TurboGrafx & Mega Drive/Genesis ports that give you a strong feeling of having the arcade game in your home. Probe Software really let down Amiga owners with a cynical ST port that was nothing more than a cash grab.🤬

Audio is better than ever now. :) There is no reason the Amiga couldn't have had a half descent port, especially as the C64 had a great version, and even the ZX is not bad, just slow. The Amiga stutters like the ZX version, and has no feel of the original layout, no original looking graphics, and not even the right colours. U.S. Gold spent about a day converting the NTSC version, and Sega spent about a week making this port. Rumour has it, they deliberately made the computer ports of Afterburner and Out Run look bad, so as to increase sales on the SMS and SMD versions - which makes sense. Saying this feels like a Blitz Basic game is an insult to Blitz, as I've seen smoother gameplay from Blitz demos. I would say this is very much like what I could make with CanDo. But at least I would use assets from the original game, and not just the title screen. We have 2 versions of Out Run AGA now on the new releases thread on Lemon, but to be honest, I'm done with the game. I would rather they ported any other game than Out Run at this point. The Amiga could do Astron Belt and laser disc games, so why waste time on this? It's not Sega Rally Championship.

It was rushed out and they had no experience with the hardwre, so im guessing it wasnt finished in time. thats the confusing thing about final fight guy? they did have experience at that point. maybe porting final fight is harder than "made for snes only" brawlers like final fight 2 and rival turf. Ah Toki, a game I actually liked quite a bit in the arcades so I was over the moon it came home on the amiga. And while I think the pang convention is better, Toki must rate in the top 10 amiga conversions. It’s tough and a bit of a memory game but the levels are short enough to get through. One of the few games I managed to finish without a trainer. The main negative for me is the small screen size, on a real amiga the window size is very small. I think this is due to the lush Parallax backgrounds that use colour cycling e.g the ice background DOES shimmer. Other downsides are the lower frame rate and a few missing enemy’s but at least they managed sound effects and music. 8/10

It's the stunning Amiga port that made me love Toki back in the day. It may not have been something extra special in the world of arcades, but as an Amiga game it felt really impressive. As you say... it's a great showcase for the Amiga hardware that really highlights how capable it is in the right hands. When it comes to Toki's design, I'd say it feels similar to the Bonk/PC Kid games. You have the same detailed, colourful and wacky design that was really popular back then. However Ocean France managed to deliver such authentic arcade ports to the Amiga... you have to applaud their development skills. 👍

The show was fantastic, so much cool stuff, loads of nice people, loved it. The after party was great, plenty of beers and questionable dancing through to the end. Had a chance to say thanks to Ravi on the walk back to the hotel.
