This makes me want to make a video of my views of cycling in japan. I’ve lived here in central Japan for 23 years and, for the most part, cycling sucks here. Now for people in a large city -those well over a million-it can be a good way to go from A to B in a slow, INdirect way. And it’s best because, DESPITE the lack of infrastructure, so many people do it: you’ll be protected by being one of the masses, so you can ride on the sidewalk, against the flow of traffic, or on the road, just like everyone else. Slowly, haphazardly, chaotically. BUT god forbid you have the temerity to actually ride at a good clip, with traffic, following the rules, and on the road where you’re supposed to be. You almost never have a dedicated cycling lane, and you’ll be inches from cars traveling beside you; Drivers on smartphones, televisions on the car, children roaming freely around the cabin -not wearing seatbelts. And you’ll go insane as drivers cut you off, pull out of side roads into the lane nearly killing you, or pass you at high speed within centimeters, only to put on their brakes at the next light and you’ll squeeze by them again. Just to have it happen at the next light, and the next. No Japan is NOT cycling nation. It’s a chaotic, lawless place where the cities, because of their teeming masses on bikes, offer you a place to cycle, and get around effectively. As my friend said recently; “I had to buy a car -I thought I was going to cycle to work, but I road raged so much that I dreaded getting on the bicycle” “ I kicked cars doors, shouted at people, spit in windows, and kicked side mirrors off” Yes that’s cycling in japan , outside of the main cities, off the packed sidewalks, riding from A to B in suburban japan. Cycling sucks here.

none of this was filmed in Tokyo - but you'd see the same critical mass of cycling there as well - and no helmets too

How sad we have to go to Tokyo to experience this: I wish every city planner could watch this video... Not a helmet in sight btw. : )

I wish America was more "bike friendly". Cheaper than a car, good exercise, fun, able to get through smaller streets or areas, and better security! You can take your bike into your apartment, house, or office unlike cars and they're better for the air and environment =)

Couldn't agree more Aoife. There's talks in Kerry about him appearing on X-Factor, and possibly Eurovision.
