That typical rock and roll pattern where you add you little finger - you’re calling it a shuffle. That is not a shuffle. (although that pattern can be used in a shuffle). The shuffle is a specific rhythm. A dotted or triplet based rhythm. This song is a straight eight based rhythm - no part of this song is a shuffle.

The verse is incorrect. It intersperses the run down with a cminor blues scale run up.

Great lesson! This song is always debated. I isloated the bass line by itself. The pick up lick at the beginning of the song is major not minor (like bluegrass) Up major, down minor . The rest is all minor. Also on the accent you metion with the vocal, the major third is there the first time, then minor up and down. Not sure if he is doing this on purpose. There is also syncopation going on in the verse on the A chord. The E is like a county bluegrass line the A is syncopated with a R&B feel ....

The chief problem with note choice in a modal tune is how to not get stuck on the inside notes and how to use the substitutions while still sounding musical.

This was awesome. I have been playing for about 3 weeks, heard the song, and went looking for the Bass-line....and found your channel. It took a while to get the groove as I was confused about the actual notes were. String and fret I understood though. From there it was what kind of notes are you playing (quarters, halves, wholes). I think i have the bass-line down now, just need to work on timing. I may have the right groove, but when i listen to afterward, i am either early or late. Already subscribed and will be visiting your channel more often. Thank you!!

Great job! Just a question for us that well...kind of stink at hybrid picking... why couldn't one simple use the E and A strings all the way up the neck, (in other words, after the first part that DOES just use the E and A strings, just keep moving up vs jumping to hybrid picking E and D strings? then for the last two beats before going into the A for the verse, do open E, open A, D 13th fret, G 11th fret beat one, then slide that down a full step beat 2, then to A. (I'm just having a heck of a time with the hybrid, especially jumping back into it at the end of the song!) What do you think?

One thing I've noticed in surf guitar is sustained notes use very little vibrato unless it's done with the bar.
