    Tim Gracyk does such a wonderful job of reviving music of another era and surrounding it with photos and background material that brings the period alive.

    I recall Albert Ammons playing this the following year. He also played a song called 'Hiroshima' in 1947 for obvious reasons.

    The Swiss Foundation Public Domain owns about 70'000 shellac records. Many of these recordings are in the public domain. They are to be digitized and published for the benefit of all music lovers. The inventory of the collection is being documented by photos of the labels of each record. Some of the digitized tracks are published in the Shellac Archive.

    Matthew de Lacey Davidson? I know the name Matthew Davidson (not the de Lacey part). I've listened to my Matthew Davidson cd issued by Stomp Off many times. Title is "The Graceful Ghost - Contemporary Piano Rags." You are an accomplished musician!

    @@timgracyk Hi Tim, I started using my middle name because there were too many Matthew Davidsons, at least 3 of whom were musicians and I even had websites attribute pieces of music to me which I had NOT written! 😀 Using my middle name seemed the best way to avoid confusion. Thanks for your kind words about my work. My best CDs including a new double album version of The Graceful Ghost will be released/re-released this year. I still read your website, used your book in research and have articles you wrote in your magazine. Excellent work! Love your YT channel too!

    Nice to hear this version, Tim, thanks for posting. A classic. BTW have you heard the version by the Marx Brothers? Not quite as “straight-laced,” obviously.

  • @timgracyk
    @timgracykКүн бұрын

    I used to know all the Marx Brothers films by heart, but it's been 30 years. I'll search for them singing "Down By The Old MIll Stream" in A Day At the Races--they go to a wash basin and sing "Down By The Old Mill Stream," I think. Three distinct harmony parts, which means Harpo sings. Also at the start of Monkey Business--the four (with Zeppo) sing while in barrels.

    @@timgracyk Yes! That’s the only version I know at the beginning of Monkey Business!! Great musical beginning to a film!

    @@MatthewDLDavidson I listened again to your Space Shuffle And Other Futuristic Rags. The execution is perfect, and you were so young! I can't imagine improving upon what I hear in that CD in the way of technique (like in the 1st track). I imagine since that time you worked at expanding your repertoire and composing (since execution is already "down"). It's nice that you included lots of Joseph Lamb, including some of this obscures ones. I read the notes and saw your connection with University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. My son went there for his master's in math during the Covid years. I suspect that town has changed since you attended (some rough areas now).

    Just an interpretation of what jazz actually was during the era. This is definitely in the ragtime style, but they are conscious of "jas." The instrumental section if essentially syncopated march. And 1:15, when they explain what "jas" is, they merely imitate what the mixture of syncopation and talent sounds like.

  • @timgracyk
    @timgracyk2 күн бұрын

    Yes, the musicians know more about ragtime than "jas." But it is INTERESTING to hear about "jas" or "jass" or JAZZ for the first time (even if it is discussed in the old ragtime manner). The year is 1916. You can't get earlier for a record talking about "jas."

    I was earlier incorrect about the names of the Giddens Sisters on Okeh 45120 when I cited the names of a different set of Giddens sisters. Okeh 45120 was recorded in Atlanta, not New York City. I added two sentences to the text part of my video: The Giddens Sisters were from Dodge County, Georgia. Their names were Minnie, Annie (Deel), Fannie, and Mary (Betty)." Is this accurate?

    Reminds of the scene in the biopic of Sousa starring Clifton Webb, where Sousa takes the cornet from a performer and gives him a very energetic example of the sort of triple-tonguing he's looking for.

  • @timgracyk
    @timgracyk2 күн бұрын

    Yes, I think so. (Kaufman's first Victor record was "They Don't Hesitate Any More"--recorded in early 1914.) By 1922, Kaufman made more money by going from studio to studio, but Victor wanted exclusive artists if singers would sign exclusive contracts.

    Tim How do you avoid people claiming copyright and if they do, what grounds do you use for your dispute. I’m having trouble with everything I post including Edison cylinders.

  • @timgracyk
    @timgracyk5 күн бұрын

    I don't avoid it. I don't worry about it. Even if a cylinder or military band 78 is long past the copyright time, somebody out there has filed a legal paper to claim a copyright on the SOUND TRANSFER. I don't fight it.
