It is a truly fascinating phenomenon for which I think there is no other explanation than an isolation that preserved German orchestral tradition, German sound. Globalisation uniformises everything, sometimes for good and sometimes for bad. And they also could avoid all the madness of the recording industry and the business of music in general.

Still for me the greatest rendition of this great Symphony. It was and is, almost crazy, Madness! Kegel was beyond awesome. And your comments about the DDR atmosphere for orchestras and recordings, yes, terrific music-making even though trying times for the musicians and the audiences trying to get to the concert halls in the first place .

Excellent performance which I have known since my youth. But one thing that has always troubled me is the drastic change in tempo from the opening measures to the remainder of the first movement.

Pleasant edges and moderately interesting although Ashkenazy finds far more flare and Russian authenticity; Mata becomes sleepy, lacks essential Rachmaninov lyricism and is poorly held together.

Thank you so much for posting this. I first heard this recording on a cross-country 707 flight in 1969, and I literally did not listen to anything else for 3,000 miles, out and back. Over all the years, and many other recordings since, this is my all time favorite. Thank you again for the youthful joys returning
