Webbys Walks

Webbys Walks

NEW WALKING VIDEO ADDED EVERY SATURDAY AT 4.00PM
Webbys Walks is a channel of walks in and around the West Midlands and further afield, focusing on the vast West Mids canal network and linking all the walking videos together with specific start and finish points. I also like to stroll around country parks and open spaces and take the odd drive out for a good walk. I also occasionally add to long-distance walking trails, including The Heart of England Way, Beacon Way, and The Wales Coastal Path. There is less talking and more walking, so please come and take a virtual walk with me and let us explore. I also have a website with maps of my walks featured on the channel. There's a link in the top corner of the channel. Webbys Walks: www.webbyswalks.co.uk

    Many thanks Andy and Ethan for a thoroughly enjoyable watch. It is very interesting to see this now, as I can remember it from the sixties when it was a busy line, carrying principally coal traffic southbound into the Midlands and empty wagons returning north for more coal.

    Nice video, thanks for sharing. Shame about the old beech tree felled by storms in 2023, and thought to be around 250 years old. It seems that the Fountain and the Hill Tavern were very old establishments and in competition. In an advert from 1862 the Hill Tavern states it is 200 yards above the Fountain ! All the best, Peter.

    The pub used to be the Fountain, then it was the Fours Stones Restaurant. , and I remember the Arcade. They used to do coffees, teas and cans of pop and ice creams in Summer . It always seemed an incongruous place for an Amusement arcade, but as there was nowhere else to get a warm drink then, you would often end up in there, clutching a plastic cup of weak tea, before heading back to wherever the car was,. It was very uncomfortable and down at heel! You just hasd to stand around with your plastic cup burning your fingers.

    I remember driving around there many years ago on a dark foggy evening and turned up a dead end road and saw the lights of an amusement arcade, and pub, I couldn't believe my eyes, it was like something from a spooky movie. I went inside to see if it was real. Yes, I think around the time the pub was called the fountain. I'm guessing I'm talking about 30 years ago, give or take. Thank you for watching, All the best, Andy 👍

    Thanks so much for your series of videos. We are currently walking the WCP and are just overtaking you at Whistling Sands. Your videos have really helped us in our planning and especially with regard to the transport links. We note that you are now doing there and back walks over the far part of the Llyn Peninsula, and wonder if you know about the excellent Fflecsi bus service which serves this area now that conventional buses no longer run there. You need to download the Fflecsi app and then enter the journey you wish to make and your preferred time. It’s more like a taxi than a bus service, but only £4 per person. They will pick you up from remote car parks and deliver you exactly where you want to go. The technology is great with maps sent to give the exact location of the pick up, and a countdown as to when the bus will arrive. We used them from Porth Oer back to Porth Tywyn, and will do so again tomorrow from Aberdaron back to Whistling Sands, and then from Hell’s Mouth back to Aberdaron. After that the conventional buses start again! It may be that you are concerned about getting to the pickup point in time now that your journeys are becoming so long, but we thought we would mention this facility just in case you didn’t know about it. Thanks again for your excellent work on the WCP - it has been really helpful for us. Perran and Rainy Gay

    I see Leamington Spa has plenty of artwork about Andy. It seems that a lot of towns and cities today think that art will save the day as our towns decline - Hereford is no different. Some nice ones there though. As far as the canal was concerned it was looking super lush and mellow - it must have been the beautiful day. A lovely walk. All the best out there. Mark

    What a craggy coastline with some cliffs, and I thought that area was flat? amazing walk, and the sea is so clear, little nooks & crannies of bays, and that Traeth Porthor looks amazing, and never known about it, better than a lot of well known beaches, but probably harder to get to, did you walk back along the coastline or did you find your way back through the tiny roads?.

  • @WebbysWalks
    @WebbysWalks5 күн бұрын

    Thank you for watching. Yes, we walked back the same way, along the coastline. It was mainly flat with a few ups and downs. Traeth Porthor was stunning. There is a National Trust Car Park nearby, but there were only a few people on the beach, on a warm Saturday. It's somewhere I want to go back and relax on one day., all the best, Andy 👍

    Dramatic Coast, very rough & rocky, the "cliff" up until porth ysgaden were melting into the sea, all collapsed down, expected to see seals all over the area? its such a wild place, I bet this area is spectacular in the winter, with the big waves, you are doing this very long walk very properly and in such detail, this will be the series about the Welsh coast forever.

  • @WebbysWalks

    Thank you, I expected to see more seals. The most we have seen so far were around Llandudno. A very dramatic coastline, worrying when the path is close to collapsed cliffs, really nice walk in the sunshine. What a FAB town, very olde worldy, most of the building look sooooo old? Walking hear is a feast for the eyes, look anywhere and everywhere, makes you want to go in that direction? this is different from some modern places, totally, streets are certainly not in grids! (when you went down Grope lane did you know that the old name for that lane, only changes about 100 yrs ago, was Gropec---t lane, yes correct, say no more, apparently it was on all the signs), very unusual town.

  • @WebbysWalks
    @WebbysWalks14 күн бұрын

    I did not know about the street name, This was an unplanned walk, using Google maps on the day we tried to fit in as much as we could, this is why it was a bit zig zaggy. I had walked along the river, park and jail before but never around the town, loved it, some of those old streets got the imagination going, imagining how it once was, Thank you for watching, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. All the best, Andy 👍

    You did it! Pen y Fan, lovely, was up there about 30/35 years ago, much smaller car park then (maybe no car park, cannot remember?) the paths up looks very good, fairly flatish, back then, well there was probably a path of sorts, certainly with no block to walk on underfoot, but I had on heavy boots so have no idea, I went up in sunshine, but yours look so FAB even in some weather, you have captured the essence of walking up a Welsh Hill is inclement weather perfectly, the scenery looks ominous in that weather but great, I think back then everything looked great in perfect sunshine very delightful. When I did it first it all was empty! I went up again maybe 20/25 years later? and it was like Piccadilly Circus, all Wales and their dogs were on top, pity about the mist, I remember FAB views all over, I went on to the Cribyn & Fan y Big (pronounced Beeg) I was mad & young then. You have to do it when its clear, its outstanding.

I can't wait to get back up there. Thank you for watching and your kind words. All the best, Webby 👍

    Thank you for this video and your other videos of walking the Grand Union canal. I'm planning to walk from Moor Street along the towpath down to Warwick and it's good to see the urban sections of the canal are looking good 👌

    Thank you, April, yes The towpath was very good all through the urban sections. I have covered this canal to Leamington Spa so far and occasionally plan to go back and do a bit more. Thank you for watching, I'm glad the videos are helpful. Let us know how you get on, All the best, Webby 👍

    Hi Andy so nice that you could bring your family here which you captured so well as you usually do. Great footage of the ruins where a customs officer lived in the 18th century, amazing views from it 😃 This area is so relaxing and secluded :) ~ Anna 👍

    It was a beautiful walk, lovely rugged coastline with a few features along the way, loved that customs officer house ruins and fishing shelters along the way. I did not know what any of this was when we were there. I got home and did some searching online. We all enjoyed the beach at the end, too. Thank you for watching, All the best, Andy 👍

    Is Austcliffe near Cookley? It's a great stretch of canal with all the sandstone and Stour along the way. The Lock pub and the little coffee ship are a great stop off. Thank you for watching, All the best, Andy 👍

    Hi Andy came back to show this to Alf and see that my previous comment didn't post so I'm leaving this to say totally enjoyed your tour. We love Shrewsbury but only been a few times and need to go back after seeing this and look at the castle and jail. We mostly stay around the river and town so this was great to see as there of sooo much we have missed. Can't leave another like so I'll leave this 👏~ Anna

    Thank you so much, Anna. I'm the same, I had only ever walked along the river, and Quarry Park so I just went off making the walk up as we went along, Fish Street and the Market Hall are a must, I think it was Fish Street, where we turned into Grope Lane, that was lovely. Looking at the map, I could do a Shrewsbury 2, as I realised I had missed a few places. Thank you for watching (twice) and commenting twice, 😉. The jail was £15, each, and you just wandered around at your leisure. The castle grounds and walk up to the tower were free. There is an admission charge for the military museum at the castle. It was closed when we were there as it was early. I think that was £5. All the best to you both, Andy 👍

    I used to cycle this canal occasionally from Wolverhampton to Wombourne, Wombourne to Kinver, and Kinver to Stourport occasionally. It was my favourite canal to cycle. That stopped about 10 years ago. My knees don't like a bike ride anymore. I did Wolverhampton to Stourport once, but got hindered on the way back by all the pubs. Thank you for watching, All the best, Andy 👍

Thank you for watching, I'm glad you are enjoying them. All the best, Andy 👍
