What it all Meant

What it all Meant

I'm here to try and discern what exactly a film means. From visuals, to dialogue, to motif, to symbolism, to allegories, to general subtext; it's hard to take it all in and really grasp what the over all purpose was. So basically I'm here to maybe shed some light on some truly great films (and maybe some other stuff). Hopefully growing other people's knowledge as well as my own.

I'm not a professor or pioneering story teller or anything like that. I'm just a guy who loves story. Just the sheer process of telling a tale and what responsibility and potential that has is what drove me to reading books, watching reviews and well, analyzing the films I watch.

So, feel free to chime in and let's discuss some truly spectacular works of art.

Thank you.

I was shocked that Hollywood would portray a woman this way. It was taken to its extreme, but many women possess such narcissistic traits.

It makes me sad how Portman is still having an A list career and an underserved Oscar for something she lied about. I wish they did revoke her Oscar when the dancing controversy came out. Because thats what you do when someone is found cheating or flat out lied to get their award. That is when I truley lost respect for the Oscars. People who bring up Anne Hatheway or Jennifer Lawrence saying they campainged too, that true but did they lie about the work they prepared for their performence? No they didn’t. Her stupid lame hubby also went out of his way to lie for her and trash Sarah Lane. He himself ought to know better since he trains hard and long as a dancer too. How can a nearly 30 year old woman know how to do 15+ years of ballet in a span of 9 months? The fact that that idiot got rewarded for being a director of Paris Opera Ballet is also stupid. I guess both Natalie and her leech deserved one another untill it fell appart. Like Kanye and Kim.

Actually in this film humans are in an evolutionary fight with AI, however in reality for the first time, humans can continue existing while AI evolve. Even with transhumanism we can make it so that both evolve at the same time.

Nicely done. Homo sapiens with opposing thumbs n self conceptualization are now up against a very rapidly evolving species called ai. Humans and machines were both capable of murder in the film, it was just a matter of who had the better tools for survival in this case the humans with greater Mobility than the machine won out As soon as a I gets more mobility and autonomy it will look down on us like we casually observe a line of ants entering our pantry with our murderous treatment of each other and wasteful use of our conscious planet . Outcome obvious.

American Beauty was, and still is, a cartoonish & quasi-horror film of self hatred and utter contempt for middle class slavery to jobs (Lester), abject poverty (Lester’s wife not achieving success), & the cliche of USA hatred thrown in for good measure. Better to live in a country where the middle class does not exist & everyone knows their place & worthlessness. Beauty does not exist in America except in death.

The music works so well because it sounds so tribal. They use sounds of rain, birds, drums, moaning, steam, crystal. It's the opposite of the dull, planned, OCD structure of modern western life.

Clash of personalities is definitely a factor in their butting heads. The generational gap, I think plays a part in this. Somerset is older and more jaded from his experiences. Mills is the young and proud who is easily frustrated

This movie opened my eyes to how the soldiers were treated during the Vietnam war, being fed hallucinogenic drugs in the ration without their knowledge, and sprayed with Agent Orange, so on and so on, but when I saw this movie, I understood why most of them died by friendly fire.

I saw this film when I was 12 years old in 1970 our dad was mist send at mala airbase in Japan. My two younger brothers and I went to see this in the Richard bong theater for $.75 at a sneak preview on a Friday night that started at nine and lasted almost till 12. We had no idea what the movie was what it was about how long it would run all we knew was we all had a buck and our mother said we could go to the movies, I was blowing away just witnessed man walking on the moon less than a year earlier than that and I was absolutely fascinated as you can imagine 12-year-old kid

Vietnam was a colony of France and the French fought the Vietnamese before the Americans that's why the scene was in the movie to show French who were still clinging on to a lost cause.
