The Laurel family were always funny people. Even Laurel's dad-when he performed in dramas-would play the comedy relief part!

Stan and Ollie did a few comedy shorts together in their very early careers, but it wasnt till they did a short where they played two business partners on a catering job at a dinner party, that Stan and Ollie officially clicked as a team and found their true comic characters: the two derby hat wearing bumbling business partners. W.C. Fields didnt officially click with audiences and become a comic star-as another example-till he did sound comedy shorts. He didnt find his true comic niche till he spoke. As a silent comedian he was funny but it turned out that his snotty, nasally voice and wise cracks about booze were his big strengths. These comics always needed an ingredient.

ive realized after the vendor put the ice cream on the counter and stan asked him whats that and he said chocolate the vendor was being sarcastic and i love when ollies reaction to stan after the vendor had said that was like "dont worry about it" without him actually saying it LOL

This is pure gold. These were filmed back when southern California was so nice and lovely, before air pollution, gangs, drugs, and crime has all but destroyed Los Angeles. It was truely a beautiful city. Tropical and tender succulents and lush, desert vegetation adorned everyone's yards, boulevards, and in the parks. One could stroll to the corner of Hollywood and Vine St. AT NIGHT without fear of predators. Sounds unreal? No, this was the order of the day in old Los Angeles, which was at the time around 90% white, which speaks volumes. Ah, but those days are gone forever and it's almost a crying shame. What a waste. All we have now is old films like these that capture those days.

Very sad, we kind of passed each other, where I was born in April 1965, he passed on in February, as did Nat King Cole, Sir Winston Churchill died in January that year.

It's interesting that no one ever claimed to be better than Stan and Ollie, but then again it's only been some 90 years or so.

Thank you so much! Is the rest of this interview available? I’d also love to see the full skit by McCann and Dick van Dyke. Chuck McCann leaves me convinced that he was as kind and sweet a gentleman as Stan. And if anyone’s dubious about how different telephone policy was once, I was 15 in 1976 and phoned Los Angeles information from Georgia to ask for the number of Ray Bradbury. The operator couldn’t give it to me but she took my number, called him and he called me back! We spoke for ten minutes and days later a package of his autographed books arrived. Over the years I often wished I knew who that wonderful lady was so I could thank her. There are such kind people in the world.

Stan and Ollie's wives were never the sweet, gentle women you could expect in other films from that era... They did not hesitate to take the shotgun of the wall , to make their position clear to the husband in question.

Sounds like it was Dick Van Dyke that did the monolog. Very fitting as you could see he studied Laurels mannerisms and it was a big part of his comedy.
