You always end up finding the coolest devices to take a look at. This was a fun one. The GMA 500 graphics is weird and quite awful to support unfortunately. Perhaps XP Tablet PC edition or a cut down 7 would be the best choice for an OS, even if they are rather uninteresting!

15:00 To be honest I came to this video in part hoping for an answer to this, but we all seem to have the same problem. You spend ages getting this niche hardware all setup and working just right, and then at the end of it you don't actually know what to do with it. Its a trap I've fallen into many times and no doubt will do again (can see a recommended video on the side for a beepberry which I know would be the same but want regardless)

I still own the 8GB version of the phone. While the keyboard is no longer operational, the rest of the device functions perfectly. The 3D speakers deliver an outstanding audio experience, unmatched by even the latest smartphones in 2024. The Dolby surround sound on this device remains superior, which is remarkable considering its release 14 years ago.

I had Windows 8 on a Surface Pro 3. I liked it. Though I’m mostly a Mac user. I thought this kinda had the middle ground of my iPad I liked and a desktop OS. I reckon if they pushed for this to work, and didn’t make my Lumia 800 redundant within a year (I really liked that phone until windows mobile 8 didn’t come out for it), I would be a windows fanboy.

The Lynx is one of my favorite portable gaming units from the past, as well as the PSP. I was a HUGE supporter for the Atari system and created "The Lynx Gaming Packet" from 1991 to 99 with around 100 pages of game codes, instructions and maps for nearly all of the games. Looking at my binder next to me on my desk, it is full of wonderful Lynx goodies from a former friend I made at Atari who would share lots of cool advertising items, maps and secrets with me during those years. I have 46 game slides; 12 "Atari Adventure" full-color booklets displaying the available titles in 15 pages; 3 "Grey Matters Vol.3" booklets from 1992 mainly covering "Batman Returns", but has 30 pages on all of the Lynx games; the "Atari Explorer Jan/Feb. 1991" magazine with 20 pages on the Lynx and games; a big, folded "Ninja Gaiden" double-sided poster; two white double-pocketed Lynx folders directly from Atari that are full of advertisements, news articles, pamphlets, and store newsletters; full-color 11x17" slick photos of the system and various game ads; tons of news releases directly from Atari, and all of the original "Atari Advantage" and "A.P.E." fan newsletter releases. My booklet full of codes, instructions and maps was sold through the newsletter. My model 2 unit is still in perfectly working condition with all of the games stored in an excellent double holder carrying bag made back then that looks like something you would buy in a store, though it was sold through "Atari Adventure", along with superb Velcro closed, three-way foldable material carrying cases for the cartridges, similar to those slots in your case, but better. I have five of those with all of my games. I only collected the best of the titles, so I have 42 of them. I used to have the store table top display stand, but ditched it years ago. Happily, I do have two of the white "California Games Lynx" T-shirts in mint condition. So yeah, I'm a big fan of the system. I was the first to create instructions on how to play the fractal generator in "Chip's Challenge" and the "Game of Life" in "Zarlor Mercenary". Same for the maps to "Electrocop" and some other game related items. I loved "Slime World" and "Warbirds" the most, but all of the titles were fun. I have all of the game boxes as well, in mint condition, with manuals. I started with the longer version 1 unit and instantly upgraded to the better, sleeker, smaller version 2 when it came out. Real soon, I'll be upgrading the screen to the amazing BennVenn IPS LCD Mod Kit - Lynx 2 screen and have all of the game ROMs on one card with the BennVenn ElCheapoSD-Lynx cartridge.

I suspect that if you want to play games on that thing your best choice might be reverting it back to Windows XP. I have an old Atom netbook that's a few years newer than that one, but not much, and I remember reading back in the day that despite the fact than that generation of Atom devices always came with W7 many installed XP as a secondary OS just for gaming since the GMA drivers had better performance on XP. I've still managed to run some mid to late 2010's indie games on it but only 2D stuff, for 3D the limit was mid 2000's era games or the rare later game that was optimized to run on a toaster like the original release of "Aaaaa! for the Awesome" (the new remastered version has almost no optimization, it almost killed my modern laptop simply because it expects a dedicated GPU, runs fine on desktop tho).

I thought Windows 8 was a great idea, but forced on the user without giving them a familiar way to use the OS. I also was a fan of Windows Phone 8 and 8.1. The overall concept was such a good idea, but pushed out in an awkward way, plus a change in leadership all but ruined a very special time where MS was the company trying to create an entire ecosystem that integrated the PC with the phone. I will always defend what MS was trying to do with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. I am a long time Mac guy, but for a few years, MS put out a PC OS and along with Nokia Windows Phones, that did a lot of things right the way Apple did. It was a wasted opportunity after Blamer left the company. I still own a laptop running Windows 8.1 and a Nokia Lumia 928 running WP 8.1. I keep them as they are as evidence of a time where MS almost firgured out how to be more than the Windows people. I wish Windows 8 ran better on this palmtop. It really is exactly the kind of device where Windows 8 would shine. I also miss OG Edge. It was a decent web browser. The Chrome reskin we now have is crap. And so I remain on Mac.
