To be fair, usually when we all need AM radio for emergencies, the grid will probably be down and there won’t be as much interference because of that.

Tesla has Cellular data. It can even act as a receiver from Starlink, thanks to the T-mobile collaboration and band licensing. Besides that, practically everyone has a phone. AM bands should have their frequencies added to public bands. They could be used for LoRa modulus and as digital signals, they would be more useful.

"AM radio is primarily only used by conservatives, so its useless", you can tell we're in the 2020s when people are saying stupid crap like that. That wasn't your comment, you were repeating someone else. You know it's the 2024 echo chamber when people refuse to use tech because people who might have opposing views utilize it. Heaven forbid a person be challenged on their views😂 honestly, I wouldn't want people like that in our spectrum anyways. The HAM community is inclusive, those people are the opposite.

Hey! That was GREAT. I really enjoyed learning about radio towers and different types of equipment. ...and I had no idea that an AM radio tower carried the signal on the tower itself. I also didn't know anything about an RF burn. Ouch! Thanks for the great information and interesting video. I hope your surgery went well and you're on the road to a speedy recovery.

I’m surprised by the fact that when I was younger (maybe 10-12 y/o) When I couldn’t sleep and was playing around at 3 am with my huge radio (can’t remember the exact model, but it looked like an Aiwa NSX-D3). I was playing around with the dial (I think I putted on SW1 around the 4.5Mhz mark) and I caught some signal from the US (I’m from Chile, so take a guess on the distance)

Yep, that is just like the hot dog experiment with a power line, but instead of 60 Hz AC, it's 1 MHz AC, or RF current.

AM radio. Like who gives a crap. "All automobiles must have the capcity to recieve FAX as standard issue". It's going the way of hay bales, we don't need it anymore. Obvious our government is made up of 40, 50, 60 year olds who can't imagine a world without their precious 60 year old tech.

It amazing that good old fashioned Amplitude Modulation or AM radio is still around. Since I am 72 years old I remember when an AM radio in a car with one loud speaker in the dashboard was an extra cost option. Back in the past the main item in a car that could interfere with AM radio reception was the High Voltage ignition system with its spark plug wires. Back then there were spark plug wires that were designed to suppress RF emissions and shielding was also used. I have heard that there are electric car manufacturers that have discontinued AM radios because the electric car electronics interfere with the AM radio. I am sure modern computer electronics can be built that do not interfere with AM radios. Many ages ago auto engineers solved the problem of RF emissions from spark plug wires.

We have 3nm transistors, backside power delivery, and stacked architecture. If the auto industry can’t figure out how to accomplish this extremely easily and cheaply using a single chip from a 182 micron process node… they deserve to be out a lot of money

Sad that in the UK that even FM is due to be taken down because everyone has been convinced that "modernizing" infrastructure means getting rid of everything analog or mechanical.

Oh, man, all of the air-form loading coils everywhere. So beefy. Phased antennas are awesome. I wish I had the land needed to set up a 5-point phasing array to do high-efficiency directionality on the fly for my ham setup. Maybe when I retire to the country...

It sounds like they think their cars should be able to emit from DC to light without any concerns, and honestly they probably did get away with that at first.

It's not just about EMS, but the FCC/Feds have sold expensive AM licenses. All EMI is regulated, though not effectively enforced. However, interfering with sold frequencies must be limited.

Once upon a time, the leading automotive companies were leaders in minimising electromagnetic interfernce, applying internal standards far stricter than mandated standards With the rise of Telsa and the like that are more tech start up, that has shifted. It is also possible that the cars meet all applicable FCC emissions standards but intenrally still interfer and prevent someone in the car using AM by the nature of a car and how close togrther everything is.

Saying "only x% listened on AM radio" is so concerning. It's an emergency broadcast system, it should be available on the most basic of systems. Failsafes and backups should be parount in high profile need cases.

One comment on DAB: it's able to form a single frequency network where all TXs for a given multiplex are on the same frequency, even adjacent ones, so the receiver doesn't change channel as such as it moves. The national BBC multiplex is an example of this.

The am radio in my car and truck barely picks up anything. I didn’t even listen to AM much in the 1980’s. Bought a jvc boombox a few months ago because I wanted to get radio and it doesn’t even have AM on it.

Interesting to watch this as a British person where stations are quickly turning off AM even breaking their licence agreements because the fines are cheaper than broadcasting on AM. Even in the middle of nowhere we now hear very little on AM (MW &LW) from either the UK or mainland Europe.

I put LED lights in my house and when any LED light is on, I have no AM reception and many FM stations pickup only a loud buzz or pulsing noise. The AM radio in my 20 year old car is about worthless. It struggles to pickup a station 3 miles away, yet the radio in my old truck from '62, picked up stations 800 miles away.
