  Irradiation is safe. All it does is blast the produce with radiation that kills bacteria. That doesn't make the food itself radioactive so you're not gonna be harmed by it in any way. GMOs are also an incredible technology that make it easier to grow food to feed people (if only corporations cared about that) and they pose no discernable threat despite a great deal of research. Pesticides, though, are a problem. No doubt about that.

  You can't seperate the GMO 's from the pesticide and herbicide inputs if the GMO 's are designed to be resistant to them. You could develop other GMO's for land reclamation, salinity reduction, or perennial crops or annualised fruit trees, even timber production. The research is skewed toward high input Agriculture, not reducing inputs. There is plenty of scope for GMO's outside the food system, i.e. plant fibres, industrial oils, fuel crops etc.
