  Wow! I never really understood or liked Carmen until now. Couldn't make sense of the characters' motives. This is a brilliant production with great actors, all of whom look the part too.

  this might be the time that was mentioned in Leone Magiera's book wherein Pavarotti got one hour and 45 minutes ovation for a performance in Berlin, world record. It might be this one, his voice was unbelievable, so clear, perfect everything, vibrato, diction, control. he had it all inside and measured it out, as he was the only one who had everything and didn't ever need to force, or strain.

  Poor Maria Guleghina, she was obviously indisposed. I heard her live as Abigaille several years later, and then she definitely had all the high notes.

  Although my favourite ever Carmen will be The Met 2010 Elina Garanca and Roberto Alagna, this is a great version too. I never watched this mezzo before, but Antonacci is a total Carmen: powerful, seductive and magical to listen to. Love the chemistry between Kaufmann and Antonacci and his madness in jealous rage is so convincing and sad. He ends up more and more dishevelled and by 'c'est toi, c'est moi' he has lost everything. Critics who think Carmen is not a good opera should watch this dazzling production and see the genius of Bizet thanks to ROH.

  The singing, conducting and orchestra are first rate but one does expect much more from the director Laurent Pelly. He was obviously on a budget but, even so, there was lots of room for more invention.

  I love Opera by Handel, I love Mozart, I love Monteverdi and I am trying..... but this music is just so dull, predictable, shmultsy , and not a single goose bump or feeling of overwhelming joy. I don't like the warbling vibrato of Carmen and the yelling to get the notes out. Michaлla voice is even worse. To be honest I don't know how anyone can like her voice. Kaufmann has a lovely voice. I heard him in Don Giovanni.I have tried but I will never have any emotional response to this. It just annoys me.
