    Where can one find optimal native seed conducive to pasturing for oxbows?

  • @ialearningfarms
    @ialearningfarms6 ай бұрын

    Typically the NRCS will have a list of seeds they use, but also check out the Tallgrass Prairie Center. They have information for native seeding including seed dealers.

    I'd be curious to know if they have considered planting a superior form of watershed management to that of trees--tallgrass prairie, which was native to the area and in many cases was the natural flora surrounding many small watersheds. Additionally, tallgrass prairie mixes can provide superior grazing with their rotational grazing in place! 5000 trees is a lot, especially since trees are often not native to many areas of the historic, Iowa landscape and don't belong. Perhaps recreating a oak/hickory savanna would be helpful for them if they were using the mass crop for feed and sale as well? Love the use of perennial small grains, really cool idea. It would be nice to see more farmers diversify like this and implement more prairie cover for grazing and overall healthier, resilient in the face of climes shifting, and historic return to the land. :)

    Plant corn and sunflowers together in row. After germination plant soybeans and buckwheat in the inter row. That way you have 4 plant functional groups for maximum plant and soil performance. Harvest corn and sunflowers together and the come back over and harvest soy and buckwheat. Seperate seeds after harvest with some seed grading gear. Count your net profit per Ha and realise you made around 50% more money with significantly less risk and improved your soil for future crops at the same time. Come back in with a diverse winter mix such as oats, radish, flax and peas or vetch. Harvest and seperate as above

    The best thing to do is to do a soil test, then provide nutrition based on the results. Dr. Heaton doesn't recommend any more than 100 units of nitrogen in Iowa. Manure is often a safe bet.

    It grows mainly from the outside of the root area so it still does fine. Would probably do better if you did cut or burn every few years but not a have to. I have some that hasn't been cut in 5 years and is looking great.

    This should be happening along all Iowa Watersheds. Water is our most precious resource. To go along with that is land management and soil restoration. Sorry but the old ways of till and kill are not working. Farmers should understand that most of Iowa is a Wetland....so when it floods it is doing what it is supposed to be doing however all the deep root fauna is gone.

    Diverse cover crops will significantly improve your soil water holding and water infiltration properties. Maintain good soil cover to reduce soil temp and evaporation. Maintain living plants in the soil at all times to feed soil microbes that improve soil structure and nutrient availability to plants

    Hint: When you put the disk blade on, it's a lot easier to lay on the ground and look in between the two blades so you can see the hole for the bolt. No fumbling around and having the washers fall off the bolt.

    These are good videos. I do find one of our problems is that we tend to equate time with money at the exclusion of all else. Looking at nature as a resource for man's use isn't that bad, as long as we keep it clear in the forefront of our minds that the planet that sustains us is a complex resource that provides us with the necessities of life. The are all interlinked in such a way that they depend on each other, and our time/money reference causes us to push beyond the boundaries that nature allows all the complex elements to evolve in balance, bringing "sickness" and weakness to the environments ability to recover as various links in these complex chains go missing or are weakened to the point where they can't serve other links in the chain that they once did.

    why are we trying to convey water off site? water can be used by creating swales which would allow water to seep slowly into soil where it can be used by crops during times of drought.

    Great Video! I'm from Hungary and in our country the farmers use conventional tillage and they don't understand what are the benefits of the conservation tillage systems and the conservation farmland management. They always till the field to reach the maximum yield. I think in my country the soil erosion is a big problem, but the farmers don't care by this. But I belive the farmland conservation and I work that the farmers know field conservation technologys. This video great example to show it
