That was a helpful, practical recap Maria :) Interesting to see how it all works in your voice and that it's somewhat similar to mine at least in the general resonance strategies. I still need to work a bit on the not taking up too much weight, while still having high notes that are not too thin or disconnected with the rest. It can be a tricky balance, huh? Do you think the pyramid might look a bit different in certain voices which are particularly strong in the high notes but have less substance to the voice lower down?
Hi Liv! I think, the heavier voice you have the more careful you have to be to not bringing up too much weight. But as you said we don’t want the higher notes to be disconnected with the rest of the body. It think it’s important to keep the throat opened while singing high notes and to not squeeze them. Maybe I should do a video about that?! 😂 For me it has always been tricky to sing higher notes, it took so many years to develop them and I still need a lots of practice. It’s not an easy thing.
@mariacasemyr Thanks :-) I've been experimenting with more or less opening at the back of the mouth, and slight variations in resonance strategies. It would be interesting to see. But I think the main thing moving forward for me now is to just enjoy the range I have and not always want more. I've been working on some nice comfortable songs in a moderate range, but focussing on nuances and expressiveness, for a couple of weeks. Also, agility exercises. Now I plan on trying Polina's aria from Queen of Spades that has a sustained Aflat. I think that's doable but is about my limit. I should know as I've been very focused on high extension for a year. I can squeak up to a high C with a small sound, but really only G#s seem reliable and suitable for a performance. A naturals I can potentially touch on lightly and quickly. At the bottom, F# is my lowest resonant and comfortable note, but I could probably go to a performable E or E flat if really needed. But I think it basically just confirms that I'm contralto, and it's a 'normal' range for that voice, unless I start comparing myself with those who have/had unusually high upper extensions such as Ewa Podles. But too much comparing isn't good.. I'm the world's best Liv Rowland version of a contralto, 😅 Also, I sing some mezzo pieces but realise now that there are tons of mezzos who are generally better at mezzo-ing.. and that's ok.. Like I just listened to a video of a friend singing Va! Laisses couler mes larmes, that I was going to try shortly (it's not super high, but has highish tessitura, coming straight in at the start on an E, followed by 4 more Es and an F ) but realised it sounded more comfortable in her voice than it probably would in mine, however much I try.. Also, any mezzo stuff with Bs and things is definitely off-limits to me.. So, I should be happy to be what I am and make the most of it.
Dear Liv! Yeah you’re totally right, you’re the best version of Liv as a contralto. We often compare ourselves to others instead of celebrating our own unique beauty. The art of singing has so much more than just reaching high or low notes. And you should definitely enjoy singing the repertoire that fits best to your voice. The contralto voice is extremely beautiful and touching in my opinion. ❤️ But often the Sopranos and Tenors get the most attention which is a bit sad. Good Luck with Polina’s aria from Queen of Spades 🎉Many warm and friendly greetings, Maria
@@mariacasemyr Thank you Maria :-)
Thank you dear Maria for this very helpful and clearly-presented tutorial. I did not know these things before. I guess it would be the same for the male voice. Have a wonderful evening! With warmest greetings, Paul
Hi dear Paul! So glad you find it helpful. Yes, it’s similar to the male voice but I’m not an expert in that area. Have a wonderful evening you too. Greetings Maria
Bravissima complimenti... Aldo
