Being an intelligent extrovert (not an intellectual) must really be a drag....completely agree with Schopenhauer! An intelligent person would never stoop to the level of these social 'animals,' while the less-intelligent would never rise to the level of the intelligent, due to their subconscious envy and inferiority complex.

Aristotle obtained his concepts regarding the soul from the Bhagavad Gita and various Brahman Priests teachings circa 1700BC . These teaching introduced the world to the concept of - One incorporeal God, and we souls being separate to God the Supreme Soul. The faculties of the soul, Mind, Intellect, Resolves and the qualities of the soul (the virtues)

I came from a big family. So difficult, so painful to help/please everyone. I just simplified my concerns, and I am more tranquil and peaceful. I'm glad to hear that the master suggested that road.

Not my experience. On the contrary, stupid people tend to be most insufferable. I’ve crossed paths with plenty of brilliant people and they tend to be quite likable and undemonstrative of their intellect. As well times have changed; the difference in intelligence between people is perhaps less apparent today, with the spread of education. My feeling is that Schopenhauer is just talking about himself. We’re not dealing here with axiomatic truths.

Standing by and watching stupid and ignorant people lead the world to ruin doesn't seem like a good philosophy. I've often hoped to one day become confident and assertive enough to stand up to those people. In reality I'm usually too apathetic or cowardly, but I've never tried to justify my lack of action as correct.

Difference: 1- Self praising in large doses is trying to affect other people consciousness directly and forcing whatever “stick” after that crude and direct method( hence negative results from other people seeing you in negative light) 2- Self praising in small occasional attempts means affecting other persons subconscious, smaller quantity will more likely bypass consciousness but will still( and slowly over time) affect subconscious and make them accept it as a reality without seeing you like a fool or resenting you

I love Schopenhauer but he was misogynist. He must not have grown up around many females. Like when I grew up, good looking girls were always popular unless they were stuck up. The stuck up ones had to come from a wealthy family and 'their' kind stuck together for friendship. A lot of his thoughts probably came from the time he was in where women were far less educated. Still, many authors from his time saw more value in women than he did. I like his thoughts on spirituality. I am not fond of Western religions.

Exactly. From experience, I will only add that the way I see the emotional response is 3 steps that cavalcade within a fraction of a second. Admiration becomes Envy becomes Hatred. Boom! I've seen it over and over. Smart, pretty, and/or thoughtful intuitive people often become scapegoats in a "competitive" family. I grew up in a large one where Maxim 34 was the rule. Too pretty, too smart, and (gasp) both generous and kind. Most of life, I didn't understand the constant abuse, shunning, and shaming. I learned to "fit in" by joining the group in making fun of how weird or "stupid" I was. But I never fit in, of course, and the abuse only grew with age. Happily recovering what is left of my shredded psyche, I will say the only thing we can change is ourselves! Solitude, books, and videos like yours, Christopher, are company enough! Thank you.

Great explanation. Short, elegant and wise. I have a question, doesn't one risk being egoistic and arrogant by calling others fools and not giving a second thought to them? I recognise the danger of walking around thinking that you're the saviour of humanity and trying to change the world. But is there really no single situation, where pointing out the other person's opinion has a fallacy may be beneficial?

This is pretty visible when you avoid talking about certain subjects with people who are threatened by differences in opinion. It’s easier to conceal big differences in worldview than it is to make light of them. There is little benefit in being completely honest about your views, especially religious views, with people who you want to be on good terms with.

More, please. Most enjoyable! PS: after reading the comments, it is apparent that some may need guidance in understanding "Satire". It requires witt ... Sorta like, "An individual who's colorblind simply can not appreciate "3 Shades of Red". I appreciate having been given the value of Witt. What would one do when they experience Life's "Opportunities for Improvements" without those brief witty thoughts, that seem to be the "curb feelers" ... toward trying for harmony again? Void of Witt ... It's a disability, Im certain!

"Everyone that has suffered through his share of troubles knows that, if one wave of woes comes crashing in, the human heart delights in giving way to absolute despair: but let a guardian god once grant smooth sailing and that same heart will just as soon assume the lucky breeze will always swell its sail" Aeschylus Persians

I’m a northern neighbour to the USA and I can’t say we did any better than the US in dealing with the First Nations people. The Cherokee forced march was a truly horrible event in US history. The Cherokee Nation had adapted to the “American” way of life and were peaceful and prosperous. They were farmers and ranchers, merchants and business owners. They were forced off their land, treaties were ignored and a genocide enacted against them. All for the land that the Cherokee had nurtured and improved. It was a shameful and criminal expulsion done purely for greed by corrupt politicians and land speculators. Shameful!

Clarifying Schopenhauer's understanding of intelligence would refute his opinion, being a Western concept and not tangibly applicable to many other parts of the world. Beautiful women do not necessarily have less friends. In fact, they could attract more because of their reflective qualities
