As many have indicated, this was the first League game of the season 1969-70; played on the 9th of August 1969. Set the tone for Everton's League Championship season. And yes, Alan Ball was missing in this game, but returned in the next match and played in all but four other games. And of course Ball was the maestro of this great team! 🤗

Everton were a very good side in 1969/70 whereas Shankly was in the process of rebuilding the Liverpool team. In the same fixture in 1970/71, and I was at that match, Everton went 2-0 up and we all thought - here we go again. But Liverpool had just bought Toshack (but Keegan hadn't arrived) and it was Steve Heighway's first season - Liverpool ended up winning 3-2 thanks mainly to those two players, and never looked back. What an exciting match that was!! Liverpool also beat Everton in the FA Cup semi final that same season, again Everton went ahead but Liverpool ended up winning 2-1. I think those two defeats against Liverpool really dented their confidence.

as others have said, everyone thought this team was going to dominate the 70s, or at least the next three or four years. And they really should have been going toe to toe with Leeds for the next five titles. Perhaps Harry just wasn't the right coach, unfortunately.
