I was there a few weeks back, the place now is such a crime ridden disaster. The city does not seem to have recovered much at all from the eruption.

I did my pre-school and Prep in Rabaul in 1970 - 1971. My father was a policeman back then. Prep schooling was at Sulphur Creek.

The good old days. Legacy of the Australian government. Those days were the best. Safe, prosperous, cheap, & beautiful. Rabaul resembles the small version of cairns. How beautiful 😢 Breaks my heart. 😢 Today, the 21st century, the PNG government is the most corrupt & mismanaged in the history of this country. Commenting from Alotau Milne Bay Province. 😢

Sebastian so many beautiful photos. So many precious memories. I lived at Keravat for two years 1968 & 1969 before moving to the highlands. Rabaul was our "look forward to" days out. The bung the friendly, happy people wanders down Mango Ave. Sitting on the grass overlooking the beach. So much exploring the tunnels . I could go on forever. Sebastian thankyou so much for the memories📷🙂 em tasol

My father was the first civilian patrol officer appointed after the war and his first posting was to Rabaul where I was born. There were other Patrol Officers (such as Jack Read) but they were ex-army. We originally lived on the flats and there were only 6 houses. Later we moved to Namanula. I can remember the Japanese destroyers and other Naval ships which were rammed up on the beach before they came back and floated them away. I was there when the first eruption occurred and my father and a number of other administrators begged the Govt to move the town. Commercialism was so powerful that when BP said they were not going to rebuild their warehouses and wharves, the Govt caved in. We were evacuated out to sea whilst the eruption occurred. I have always considered myself Tolai even though I am white. It was my first language. I might have to disagree with the assumption that Rabaul is the most beautiful town in New Guinea...I would give that vote to Madang.

wow was that in 1937? Man it must have been a sight to see the japanese destroyers in the harbour! Where in Namanula did you live coz I lived there in 92' in this old german house built on a nice hill right under the enourmous mother mountain.. I will push back on madang though, the volcanics of new britain is special.
