Michelle Herren

I'm a lifelong plant lover, and in 2019, I discovered tropical houseplants. My house is currently home to about 150 plants, and my primary interest is in Hoyas. I live in a desert (ultra low humidity), so I utilize three IKEA cabinets converted to greenhouses to grow a lot of my Hoyas. Right now, that's where the focus of my channel is, but it used to be on my creative endeavors.

I'm a lifelong crafty person who began designing polymer clay jewelry and art pieces in 2004. I have been published in several magazines, including Polymer Cafe and Step By Step Jewelry. I have been commissioned for work from craft and clay manufacturers. I discovered adult coloring books in 2015.

I've been married for 31 years to my best friend, and have 2 adult children. When I’m not taking care of my plants, making or editing videos, or spending time with my family, you’ll find me cooking, watercolor painting, making soaps and candles, creating hand bound books, and working on my various tech devices!

    Hello, wonderful video! I have the same vittsjo shelf with barrina t5's (the pink ones) and have been growing lots of orchids for many years. I set up this vittsjo shelf with the barrinas in January 2024. I run two 3 ft lights per shelf and my orchids seem to be blooming non stop and producing many roots. the problem im having is with the leaf growth. The leaves seem to be stunted and a bit purplish/red from the anthocyanins due to high light. I run the lights for 12 hours everyday. My question is, is one light sufficient enough for your plants per shelf? I think the plants are getting slightly burnt and chlorosis from too much light. I do have supplemental light because the plants are on the sides of a window (not directly in front).

    I love your approach of not moving your hoyas from different spots. I for one doesnt like putting my plants inside a cabinet or use grow lights...i just put them by my windows so they get some natural light. Of course my hoyas gets the west facing window and they love it...but i noticed the Fitchii and the Elliptica lost some leaves and started to yellow and dropped so maybe it was too much indirect sun for them so i moved them to the east facing window...will see what happens....i have 30 hoyas now and enjoy the different leaves, textures, shape, and their sizes...im in Toronto Ontario Canada...i enjoy your short videos as its concise and informative...thank you!

    Question: I read that aluminum wire doesn't rust so I followed this tutorial a few months ago. This last week I noticed rustlike growth where the trellis meets the soil, is anyone else seeing this on theirs and is it safe to use aluminum trellis long term?

  • @herrenfam
    @herrenfam23 күн бұрын

    Are you using brightly colored anodized aluminum wire, or dull grey regular aluminum wire? I always use the anodized craft wire because it has a clear coating on it. I’ve found that wire will get a bit of a whitish buildup around the base of the wire, but it’s small and doesn’t bother anything.

It's always something, isn't it. Really like your advice on taking care of plants with limited time to do so, especially the battery powered waterer. Might have to look into that. Thanks for asking. I’m sorry for the lack of update - I’ve been hit with a group of illnesses. The undulata is still in the plastic bag with the damp moss, the roots are a solid base that you can hold on to at the place the stem was cut. They are about 1” deep and about 2-3” in diameter. I think the roots are established enough that I could plant the rest of the plant, but I think it’s going to have to stay in moss, etc.

    Thank you! I have a Caudata gold that was quite expensive, so I understand how you feel. Maybe you could put it on a birthday or holiday wish list? I have troubles rooting the Bella too. I think the substrate doesn’t matter, what matters is you monitor the stem frequently to make sure it is not rotting. I’ve found the Bella stem rots very easy, even in dry substrates like pon; and I’ve rooted cuttings with no problem in water. I think monitoring it is key, and trimming the stem as soon as it gets soft.
