    Was disappointed that this leaned to one side, the black team from 67 with Sue Bell. Nothing said about the red team. I was head of red cheers in 67. All the heads of specialty numbers were my friends including the captain & nothing said. I know there is a video of 1967 sport nite i saw it my last day of school.

    Nice video. I wouldn't live in Trenton if you paid me. It's a shame, because Trenton has so much potential, and a long history. I guess the civic leaders are happy to be better than Camden, but don't aspire to be more. It's the state capital. I guess the state doesn't care much about the place either. I really enjoy the old architecture in Trenton when I'm there, even though the state capitol building is a disjointed hot mess. I'll be optimistic that one of your graduates will have the vision and leadership to get things done.

    Mom was Class of '47 and a Black-Team cheerleader (A Matelena) and Dad was Class of '42 (V Smith). The border of the city of Trenton had to be changed as, after the purchase of the Chambers Farm, it was realized that it was in the Borough of Wilbur, part of Hamilton Township. The school district was also involved in the Brown v Bd of Ed discrimination lawsuit as it had been the target of a discrimination suit because the Jr Highs were segregated - the black Jr High was Lincoln School on Montgomery while Jr's 1 - 4 were white. That suit laid the groundwork for the US Supreme Court suit. Never quite understood how that worked though - the Jr Highs were segregated but the 1 Sr High was not - odd.

  • @OneArticCat
    @OneArticCat3 жыл бұрын

    That area was already part of Trenton, when Trenton bought the Chambers’ farm for a future high school. In the meantime the land was used for ball fields, carnivals, midways & iceskating before construction started in 1929.

    I am Hispanic but my great grandfather graduated in 1957. He told me people dressed a lot more modestly and were much more concentrated in their studies. He told me it was hard for him since there were mostly Polish and Italian kids and they did not welcome him with open arms. They hated him and integration. They hated Latinos and especially blacks. He was bullied badly in his days. But he enjoyed his experience during the 50s period of TCHS.

    Class 85 here is good to see at the beginning how racist and segregated Trenton Central high once started I was fortunate enough along with two of my brothers one being class of 1979 the other being class of 1982 to having two of my four children graduate from Trent Central high class of 2017 and on class in the new facility 2020 but if anybody has footage from the school play title school days I played Mary McLeod Bethune I would love to have that footage to show my children so if anyone has a copy of that please post it it's good to relive memories of long ago and hopefully when it's pandemic is over the hallways will fill with students and faculty and they too will have their TCHS memories!

    Trenton Makes The World Takes. This was filmed back when there were jobs available which could sustain families. We no longer have that since we subcontracted our manufacturing heavy-lifting to other points on the globe. Not far from downtown Trenton, my grandmother worked at GM's Fisher Body plant on Parkway Ave. in Ewing Township while my father, two uncles and grandfather worked at US Steel's new plant in Falls Township, Pennsylvania. The area was thriving.

    This School was demolished because of years of neglect. There were so much architectural features in the school that made impossible to repair on the city's budget. Patching made it even worse. Putting a new roof on and not replacing the damaged beams under it is just unforgivable. The dental features at the soffits were beautiful and rotted through and falling down. Sad to see it go. As far as was the school segregated no. They didn't publish pictures with students of color in those days.

    Although Trenton High School was not a segregated high school, there was segregation in the Trenton school district in the lower schools. The New Lincoln School was a segregated school for African-Americans, which later became Junior 5, and is know known as the Luis Munoz Rivera School. Trenton high school was never a segregated school. All students throughout the ciity attended. As the demographics of the city changed, so did the demographics of Ytemyon High School. The lower schools in Trenton were at one time segregated. The New Limcoln School (which later became Jr 5) was the city's black Jr high school. The Hedgepeth and Williams vs the Trenton Board of Education case ended segregated schools in Trenton in 1944. And helped to integrate American public schools.

    Rosemary Shrieves techs was never a segregated high school. As the demographics changed so did the numbers of Black & Latinos. Less whites and the white kids became the minority as they went on to McCorstin & the township schools
