    There is no reason a safety inspection would involve headlight "adjustment", there isn't any reason they would try to adjust your headlights and mess them up. They wanted you to buy new ones because they didn't like how faded the OEM's were, what a scam. Also those are the OEM Sylvania headlight housings, hopefully you kept them because they're rare

    Thanks for watching! The light mounted easily, 2 screws. Wiring wise, one wire is a ground (you can ground anywhere close by). The other (positive wire ) had a bullit connector on it. I bought a kit and crimped a bullit connector on it. Hope this helps.

    Hi Pete. I also have a 68 and am researching aftermarket tach install. I actually have an in-dash (clock replacement) mini-tach, but I found an original tach and gauge frame, and I do have a GT wiring harness, but I may get this converted to a 3 wire digital tach. What wiring harness / coil / ignition setup do you have? Did you plug directly into the harness or were there are wiring mods made?

  • @68Stang
    @68Stang Жыл бұрын

    Hey Mike! Thanks for the comment. I made mods on mine. You can get switched 12v power from the back of the ignition switch. Ground can go anywhere. I've got a GM HEI distributor so i ran the green wire straight to the 12v- on that distributor. That's what i got going on for now, I'm getting ready to do a complete rewire of that car with the American Autowire setup, so things will change. I'll be making a bunch of videos during that process. Thanks for watching, good luck on your 68'.

    Watching your vids again, Jonesin to ride mine! Raining, sleeting, snowing here right now. Couple things, Turning the throttle when engine off does nothing but open butterflies. No acceleration pump on this bike. What's happening is if parked awhile the float bowls dry out and with a vac. operated petcock won't fill without cranking engine. To save the battery/starter pull small hose off petcock, install a length of hose and apply vacuum to it for 30 seconds. You can just suck on it. Bike will start immediately. Lube a chain right when you get back from a ride. Then it's hot, absorbs the lube better, plus can dry off completely before next ride. Save your next pizza box, put the lid between the chain and wheel, then you can blast away on the bottom run, really soak the chain, with zero overspray. I do it once a tank. Spray is cheap, chains and sprockets aren't.

  • @68Stang

    Subbd. for the Nighthawk content only. I just picked up a 92 with 20k miles in great shape end of Oct. Got a few rides in before it got cold here in PA. Now it's in the basement for maint. and mods. Pull carbs, clean, and up-jet, lube cables, adj. steering bearings, etc. etc. How many miles on yours? There is a whine from yours at 14:55 that shouldn't be there. Chain too tight? Better loose than too tight. Bike charging systems: Small battery, not optimal charging system. Just keep on the tender when parked. The 83 650 Nighthawk was particularly bad. Won't charge till 2-3k rpm. Discharges at idle. Had one back in 83. Ive had several 1100-1300cc bikes through the years, now going back down in size as I get older. Keep the riding videos coming!👍

    Thanks Pete! I will check the chain, it's amazing how such a little adjustment goes a long way with the chain. My bike has around 13,000 miles maybe 14,000. I bought it in 2002 with like 2,400 miles on it. It really has been an incredible bike. I do keep it on a trickle charger when it is parked in the garage.

    Two things... 1st of all, your charging system is working well, and 2nd, your battery had enough of a charge in it to run your bike after jumping it, and bump-starting it... if your battery had been completely dead, your bike would have died in the driveway, or you'd be stranded at that gas station. The charging system in most bikes is "maintenance" system... in other words, your battery is fully charged at 12volts, and the charging system maintains that charge. It's not designed to work like an alternator in a car... in a car, if you jump a dead battery, the alternator will completely run all the systems in the car (even if you unhook the battery), and also recharge the battery. A motorcycle system doesn't do that; it's designed only to maintain the battery when it's fully charged to 12volts - it will Not recharge the battery, like an alternator does... I've had far too much experience with all of this on my 1983 Nighthawk 650SC... when not riding your bike, keep the trickle charger hooked up to the battery... otherwise, if a battery discharges too many times, it will destroy the cells, and you'll be buying a new one every year... I have a good-old-fashioned Yuasa battery, with open cells, so I can top off the cells if need be... mainly because I can't find an AGM closed-cell battery here on Oahu, in Hawaii... but maybe I'm old fashioned, as I like to be able to see the acid levels in the battery...Aloha! :)

  • @68Stang

    Hey Ian, thanks for the comment! I am always learning.😀 I do actually have a "trickle" charger, i just had it unplugged. Duh! The battery was 7 years old, so i got a pretty good life out of it. @@68Stang my Nighthawk came with the trickle charging pigtail already installed - used it several times when I first bought the bike, because I was having charging issues. Traced the issue to my dying Stator; bought a new one ($180 landed to my door), bought a good used Regulator off eBay ($38), installed them both. Bike was running fine... then one day, while leaving my local Supermarket, the bike went dead - no lights, nothing! I found out the the 30-amp fuse on the starter solenoid had popped. Replaced it, but still had no lights etc. Fortunately, I was only a 1/2 mile from my house, so I pushed it home. Thought I had a dead-short somewhere, so I started taking the front end off - Headlight, completely took apart the fuse block, took apart the ignition switch (That was a bitch to put back together!), all to look for burnt wiring, crossed wires etc. Put it all back together, then figured it was time to change out the battery... it had sat for long periods of time before I bought the bike, then had been recharged from dead at least a 1/2 dozen times after I bought it. Couldn't find a closed-cell AGM here on Oahu (which is what was in the bike when I bought it), so went to the local Napa store, and bought a Yuasa for about $60. After filling the cells with the supplied acid, and letting it sit overnight (as recommended in the instructions), I installed it, and I've never had another issue with the charging system.... turns out the battery finally created a dead-short inside itself... so, I never think twice about going on rides and being stranded because an electrical issue... I do however, have full coverage insurance through Geico, so if the bike breaks down for whatever reason, it will be towed back to my house free of charge... What camera are you using to record videos? I want to start videoing my rides.... Aloha!
