I’m debating on a degu or a chinchilla. They both sound interesting but I don’t know what to really decide on
I took care of degus as a child and dreamt of having one again. I fell in love with a little girl so I bought her. Then I went on finding a degu friend for her but most were unneutered males. Then I happened to find twin sisters and felt sorry for the twin left behind so I bought both. (No chance to adopt degus from other owners. The closest girl was 1000 km away.) Now I've been hunting for a large cage for the last 10 days. And hopefully during the next 2 weeks they can move into a new home.
The wheel is too small
Degus are cool. I have a male/female pair. They can eat grass, romaine lettuce, and carrots once in awhile. Mainly rodent blocks and timothy hay. They need dust baths not mentioned. Recently, you can get gray, black, and beige with various amounts of white. The male is a black dalmatian. The female is blue (gray). Singles usually loose their tail hair. That's why you keep them in pairs. 🐀🐾

Hace 2 días mi hamster cita hamir murió producto de hermorragia producida por infección a su útero , yo no sabía mucho de es aenfermedad recuerdo hace meses encontré sangre por algunos sitios que ella caminaba pensé que se había contado o algo y la curaba luego estaba bien por semanas hasta que denuevo sangraba y era amas frecuente también recuerdo que en mi ignorancia aveces se quedaba quita levantaba su colita parecía que estaba en celo pero le salía una secreción blanca y olía feo pero pensé que era su celu nunca la crucé con otro hamster sigui pasando el tiempo y ala tenía casi un año y medio a mi hamir y a pesar que comía mucho estaba gordita y dormía hasta las 9pm se levantaba aveces a orinar y a comer y tomar su agua en su jaula a las 9 estaba esperándome en su jaulita a qué la sacará a qué camine y explore yo la tenía siempre en mi cuarto y aveces la ponía en su pelotita para que valla a varios sitios ella siempre regresaba al cuarto y tocaba la puerta con la esfera y yo le habría y sacaba para que caminara así paso año nuevo de este 2022 y el día 6 ví que había sangrado mucho en su papel higiénico de su casita pensé que era otro corte revise pero no ví nada que le podía lastimar entonces empecé a investigar y leí sobre la infección que les da a las hamster que no han Sido castradas y yo quizá sin ninguna recomendación le hecha a agüita oxigenada y aveces hasta violeta de genciana en su herida aignorando que era en su vulva hasta que me di cuenta que sangraba por su partesita ya no le intente curar pero no para la emorragia quince contactarme con veterinarios y ninguno quiso atenderla decían que lo ven otra clase de veterinarios para animales exóticos aqui en Perú lentablemente hay muchos charlatanes o seudoveterinarios y cuando contacte con un veterinario especialista me dijo que costaba aproximadamente 200 dólares la operación pero ya estaba muy mal mi hamstercita intente vender unas cosas para llevarla y que no cuento con trabajo por ahora y me da mucha pena que empeoró ya no quería comer al siguiente día tomaba agüita y hasta aquel lo lleve a mi cama la abrigue le puse un papelito para que no lo mojara pero siguió sangrando y fue muy triste y me sentía muy mal porque no sabía cómo ayudarla ella se levantaba de rato en rato porque sentía que estaba mojada y corría quería escapar yo la tenía en mis manos y en mi pecho como siempre le hacía jugar pero ella ya estaba muy débil su respiración era muy lenta y hasta el final estube con ella sabiendo que estaba llegando el momento y maldiciendo a los veterinarios del Perú porque solo tratan a perritos y gatos pero a ningún animal silvestre y luego de tanto sufrimiento y que cada minuto perdía más y más sangrecita la ví morir entre lágrimas y pidiéndole a Dios que l sane o la lleve pero ya no quería que siga sufriendo y ella pobrecita empezó como a rechinchar llorar y sentí que se ahogaba fue lo peor que he sentido y visto partir a mi hamster hasta que luego de esa gaonia interminable falleció y llore como nunca y hasta el día de hoy y apasaron dos días y aún siento la perdida de mi hijita de mi mejor amiga mi compañerita quizá pide hacer más y no lo hice es algo que quizá nunca me perdonaré Hubiera vendido mis cosas y la hubiera llevado a operar quince compartirles esta triste historia de mi hamstercita para que UD no cometan el herror de no llevarla al veterinario con el primer síntoma y si tienen la dicha que haya veterinarios de animales exóticos en su país y ciudad siempre la lleven hacer su chequeo no quisiera que sufran sus mascotas lo que sufrió mi hamir ella ya está descansando en paz sin sufrimiento pero me queda un gran vacío en mi corazón y en mi cuarto extraño mucho cuando caminaba mordía y llevaba sus semillas y improvisada sus madrigueras.

You have wrong setup, as I can see. You should provide them with at least 20cm deep bedding, they are not hamsters, they need to dig. The cage is wrong too

I got a new hamster today and she won't stop sneezing I think she might be allergic to her bedding. The bedding I use is the Kaytee clean and cozy (non scented). Is that a common allergy or do u think I should take her to the vet?

Back in the early 2000's we had 3 of them, shocked there not more common now ah days, they make great pets, the last one we had, Hoodini was his name and when me and my old man would play Guitar Hero, that little machine at age 9 would get on his wheel and haul to Song 2 by Blur, that littel guys loved music

Hey i was just wondering id anyone knows my problem with my degus Recently i noticed that he went from really thin to really fat, it might have to do with his food, since i mixed some treats in it to encourage him to eat, not too much though, but enough for both of my degus. And just now i saw that his poop is a lot paler than normal, does it have anything to do with the treats? He’s acting like normal, sleeping a lot, running around chewin* on his toys, etc. But I’m kinda worried Unfortunate update #1: i think that he- i mean they might be pregnant i’m not sure about the gender since my other degu literally tried having seggs with my *may-be-pregnant* degu Unfortunate update #2: she just gave birth WAY too early-...

Is a 57 gallon diy cage (from wood and glass) (used for hamster) suitable for 2 gerbils? I would love to get 2 little guys someday

Most of my degus lived to almost 7 years old. I loved them. I was looking for a hamster but I found the degus in the pet store. I miss my degus dearly. Make sure to have their teeth done with a dental tool, not clipped, if necessary.
my first degu was with me for 10 years and i have literally the same history - looking for hamster and ended up with degus and never regretted it:D once ill be able to give them the space they need, food etc (in my current house it isnt possible:( ) i will adopt more than 2 for sure! best pets ever

I had rats for a short period of time and I got so attached to my boys so damn quick! They're so lovable
It makes me laugh that in other countries they pay to have a degu or Chilean mouse, being that here it is the equivalent of a rat xd

My two boys are 2 1/2 and I notice they were losing weight so I had to up their fat by giving them more sunflower seeds. They have a two story cage too so I’m lowering everything so they don’t have to claim to get their food. I feel anxious everyday knowing it might be they’re last. It’s bittersweet to love an animal that has such a short life.

I'm an experienced Guinea pig owner and also im getting there with my rats too, I think degus would be a percect next pet for me.
