  funny how every time I hear the 18th variation of this piece my monitor always seems to get blurry. must be something wrong with my video card.

  Thanks for posting. I'm sure I'm just nit-picking but cutting off some or all of the winds for some pages of the score was a little annoying.

  The violin cadenza in the last movement is very reminiscent of "The Lark Ascending." Here are some very approximate tempos: 1. Prelude, half = 48 2. Scherzo, half = 120 (yes I know 7/4 isn't divisible into half notes, but that's the tempo) 3. Alla Sarabanda, Lento ma non troppo, quarter = 46 4. Burlesca, Allegro moderato quarter = 84, poco piu mosso quarter = 124, Andante quarter = 64, Presto quarter = 144, Andante quarter = 80.

  It's plays and listens like a well written novel that keeps you turning the pages. And then in the remarkable simplicity of the ending, it tells yet another story, not unlike Henry James' "The Bostonians." Somehow Rachmaninoff has composed an expression of my inner being. How I would like to have met him.

  An absolutely wild ride from start to finish. Variation 18 just sounds so much like love to me, and the entire thing is wonderfully chaotic. I think I've found my new favorite piece :)
